Life of João Cutileiro
João Cutileiro was born and lived most of his life in Lisbon, Portugal. He became a very important artist, especially known for his modern public sculptures. One of his most famous works is the statue of Sebastian of Portugal, which was unveiled in 1973 in Lagos, a city in the Algarve region.
His work was very important because it marked a big change in Portuguese public art. Before him, much of the art was made in a more traditional style, often linked to the Estado Novo period. This was a time when Portugal was ruled by a strong government. Cutileiro's art helped bring a new, modern style to public spaces in Portugal.
