Joanna Lisa Martin (born 29 April 1969) is a talented British actress. She is well-known for her roles in popular TV shows. These include The Crouches, where she played Natalie Crouch, and Holby City, where she was Max McGerry. She also played Janice in Back to Life.
One of her most famous roles is the Fugitive Doctor in Doctor Who. She also appeared as Grace in Dreaming Whilst Black.

Early life
Jo Martin was born in Newham, London, on 29 April 1969. Her parents came to London from Jamaica in the 1950s. She went to Portway Primary School and then Plashet All Girls Secondary School.
Career
Jo Martin has had a long and successful acting career. She has appeared in many films and television shows.
Playing the Doctor in Doctor Who
Jo Martin made her first appearance in series 12. This was in the episode called "Fugitive of the Judoon". She played a character named Ruth Clayton, who was a tour guide. Later, it was revealed that Ruth was actually a secret version of the Doctor. This version is known as the Fugitive Doctor.
Many people really liked Jo Martin's performance as the Doctor. She returned to play the role again in other episodes. These included "The Timeless Children", "Once, Upon Time", and "The Power of the Doctor". She also made a short appearance in a 2025 episode called "The Story & the Engine".
Beyond the TV show, Jo Martin also stars in audio adventures. These are called The Fugitive Doctor Adventures. They are special audio stories that focus on her character.
Tales from the Front Line
In November 2020, Jo Martin starred in a film called Tales from the Front Line. This film was made by the Talawa Theatre Company. In the film, Jo Martin played a teacher. She talked about how teachers tried to keep themselves and their students safe during the pandemic. She also spoke about the feelings caused by the global Black Lives Matter movement. Critics said her acting was very natural and real.
