Joan Sardà i Dexeus (born April 13, 1910, died December 23, 1995) was a smart Spanish lawyer, economist, and writer. His ideas helped create a big economic plan in Spain in 1959. This plan led to a time called the "Spanish miracle," when the country's economy grew very fast from 1959 to 1973.

Early Life and Education

Joan Sardà was born in Barcelona, Spain, on April 13, 1910. He finished high school in 1927. After that, he went to the University of Barcelona to study Law.

While studying law, Joan became very interested in economics. He started writing about economic topics for a newspaper called L'Opinió. He even joined the team that put together a magazine called Economia i Finances (Economics and Finance).

In 1932, he earned his law degree. He then got a Ph.D. in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid. A very important teacher named Adolfo González Posada helped him with his studies there.

To learn even more about economics, Joan studied at the London School of Economics and the University of Munich. He then came back to Spain in 1934.

Working as a Professor and Public Servant

Soon after returning to Spain, Joan Sardà began teaching. He worked as an assistant professor at the University of Barcelona. He taught there until the Spanish Civil War ended.

Many of his fellow professors encouraged him to focus more on economics. They also helped add more economics classes to the university's programs. During this time, he also started working for the government. He became an advisor for the Banking, Savings, and Stock Exchange Commissioner in Barcelona.

After the war, he stopped teaching for a few years. He became the head of the Association of Banks in Northeastern Spain. He also wrote regularly for a publication called España Bancaria.

Joan tried to go back to teaching several times. Finally, he got a job at the University of Santiago de Compostela. He taught about economic policy and public finances there. However, this job only lasted for one year.

In 1951, he moved to Venezuela. He continued his teaching career at the Central University until 1956. While there, he also worked as a consultant for local banks.

The Spanish Economic Miracle

When Joan Sardà returned to Spain, he played a very important role. He helped create the National Stabilization Plan. This plan was led by Alberto Ullastres Calvo and Mariano Navarro Rubio. It helped bring about the "Spanish Miracle."

The plan had several main goals. It aimed to balance the country's budget. It also wanted to make the job market and international trade more open. Another goal was to control rising prices through careful money policies.

During this time, the Spanish economy grew incredibly fast. It reached levels similar to countries in Central Europe.

As Joan Sardà's reputation grew, he helped start the economics department at the University of Barcelona. He was also chosen to lead the Spanish teams for the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

In the years that followed, he wrote many articles and books. Most of his work focused on how money policies affect the economy. He also started the Monthly Statistical Report for the Bank of Spain. He worked with the central bank's research and statistics team.

By the early 1970s, when the Spanish economic boom slowed down, Joan Sardà was known as one of Spain's most important economists of the 20th century.

Joan Sardà passed away on December 23, 1995.
