Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jochem Pietersen Kuyter (died 1654) was an early settler in a place called New Netherland. This area later became part of what we now know as New York. He was one of the first people to settle in the area that would become Harlem on Manhattan Island.

Kuyter became an important person in the community. He served on special groups of citizens called the Twelve Men, the Eight Men, and the Nine Men. These groups helped govern the colony.

Early Life and Arrival in New Netherland

Jochem Kuyter was born in Dithmarschen, a region that is now part of Germany. He was Danish by birth. It is believed that he worked for important trading companies like the Danish East India Company and the Dutch East India Company.

In 1639, Kuyter teamed up with another settler named Jonas Bronck. They rented a ship called "de Brant von Trogen" (The Fire of Troy). They sailed to New Netherland to start a new life. Kuyter arrived at the port of New Amsterdam in July 1639.

Settling in Harlem

Kuyter settled with his farmers and herders on a large piece of land. It was about 400 acres (162 hectares) of good farming land. He received this land from the Dutch West India Company.

His home was named Zedendaal, which means Blessed Valley. This land stretched along the Harlem River. It was located roughly where 127th Street to 140th Street are today. Kuyter was married to Lentie Martens. She might have been the sister of his friend, Jonas Bronck. They did not have any children.

In March 1644, Kuyter's house was burned down. This likely happened during a time of conflict between the settlers and the native people. This conflict was known as Kieft's War.

Public Service and Leadership

Jochem Kuyter was a respected leader in New Amsterdam. He was one of the few Danish people in the colony to gain such high standing.

He served on several important citizen boards:

  • Board of Twelve Men: He was a member from August 1641 to February 1642.
  • Board of Eight Men: He served on this board from September 1643 to September 1647.
  • Board of Nine Men: After a trip to Holland, he became a member of this board. He served from September 1647 until New Amsterdam became an official city in 1653.

When New Amsterdam became a city, Kuyter was appointed as the schout. This was like being a sheriff or chief officer.

Conflicts with Governors

Kuyter was a well-educated man. He sometimes disagreed with the leaders of New Netherland.

He believed that Willem Kieft, who was the Director-General (governor) of the colony, was harming the area with his decisions. Kuyter especially disagreed with Kieft starting Kieft's War in 1643.

In 1647, a new governor named Peter Stuyvesant arrived. Kuyter and another citizen, Cornelis Melyn, spoke up for the people of New Amsterdam. They asked for an investigation into Kieft's actions while he was governor.

However, Stuyvesant did not want to allow this. He saw it as a challenge to his own authority. So, he had Kuyter and Melyn put on trial. They were accused of disrespecting the governor. The court quickly decided against them. They were ordered to leave the colony.

Appealing to Higher Authority

On August 16, 1647, Kuyter and Melyn sailed on a ship called the Princess Amelia. They planned to appeal their case to the States-General in the Netherlands. The States-General was the highest governing body.

Their ship ran aground off the coast of Wales, but both men survived. They were able to present their cases in early 1648. The States-General agreed with their appeal. They issued an order on April 28, telling Governor Stuyvesant to explain his judgment against Kuyter and Melyn.

Later Life and Death

In 1651, Kuyter sold three-fourths of his land. He continued to farm the rest of his property.

Sadly, Jochem Kuyter was killed by Lenape people in 1654. Before his death, the leaders in Amsterdam had recommended that Governor Stuyvesant appoint Kuyter as New Amsterdam's schout (sheriff).
