Joe Dombrowski is an American former professional cyclist. He was born on May 12, 1991. Joe competed in many races from 2011 until he retired in 2023. He was known as a strong climber, especially good at riding up hills.
Joe rode for several different teams during his career. These included Bontrager–Livestrong, Team Sky, EF Education First, UAE Team Emirates, and Astana Qazaqstan Team. One of his biggest wins was a stage in the famous Giro d'Italia race in 2021. He also won the overall title at the Tour of Utah in 2015.

Joe Dombrowski was born in Christiana, Delaware, in the United States. He grew up in Marshall, Virginia. Today, he lives in both Marshall, Virginia, and Nice, France. Before becoming a professional cyclist, Joe studied at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, from 2009 to 2010.
Joe's Cycling Journey
Starting Out in Cycling
Joe Dombrowski started his cycling journey with different types of biking. He began mountain biking in 2006. Then, he tried cyclo-cross in 2007, which is a mix of road cycling and mountain biking. In 2009, he started road racing with a local team called Haymarket Bicycles.
He joined a professional team, Trek–Livestrong, for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. In 2012, Joe had some great results. He won the Girobio, which is a big race for young riders in Italy. He also finished fourth in the Tour of Utah and tenth in the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.
Riding for Team Sky
From 2013 to 2014, Joe rode for Team Sky, a very well-known team. During this time, he helped his teammate Chris Froome in many stage races. In 2014, Joe had a successful surgery on his iliac artery, which helped him continue racing strong.
Success with Cannondale–Garmin
Joe joined Cannondale–Garmin for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. This team was also a top professional team. In 2015, while getting ready for the Vuelta a España, he won the overall title at the Tour of Utah. This was a big win for him!
He continued with the same team, which later became EF Education First, until 2019. In 2019, he won another stage in the Tour of Utah. He also had his best performance in a Grand Tour race, finishing 12th overall in the Giro d'Italia.
Time with UAE Team Emirates
In 2020, Joe signed a two-year contract with UAE Team Emirates. The 2020 season was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but Joe still competed.
In the 2021 Giro d'Italia, Joe had a fantastic moment. On a rainy fourth stage, he was part of a large group of riders who broke away from the main pack. He rode ahead on the last climb and won the stage by 13 seconds! This was his first win in Europe since 2012. After this win, he moved up to second place overall in the race and wore the blue jersey as the leader of the mountains classification.
However, the next day, Joe had a crash and had to leave the race because of a concussion. Later that year, in the Vuelta a España, he was again part of an early breakaway group. He attacked near the end of a stage, finishing second behind another strong rider, Rein Taaramäe.
Joining Astana Qazaqstan Team
In October 2021, Joe signed a two-year contract with Astana–Premier Tech, which was later known as Astana Qazaqstan Team. He rode for this team until he retired from professional cycling in 2023.
