Joel Adams (born February 4, 1750 – died July 9, 1830) was an important farmer and soldier from South Carolina. He lived in the lower part of Richland County.

Adams was a leader in the South Carolina local army during the American Revolution. He also served in the main American army, called the Continental Army. He married Grace Weston and they had seven children together.

Joel Adams: A Leader in South Carolina

Joel Adams played a big part in growing crops in central South Carolina during the 1700s. He helped make the area's farming successful. He also had a lot of influence in the state's government. He helped make Columbia, South Carolina the center of state politics at that time.

Adams strongly believed in the importance of education. He also thought it was important to serve your state and country. He showed this by serving in the South Carolina House of Representatives. This is where laws are made for the state.

His Family's Legacy

Joel Adams had a family that continued his legacy of public service. Many of his descendants also became important figures.

Notable Sons and Grandsons

Two of his sons, Joel Adams II (1784–1859) and William Weston Adams (1786–1831), went to Yale University. They both served in the South Carolina House of Representatives.

His grandson, James Hopkins Adams, also graduated from Yale University. He became the 66th Governor of South Carolina from 1854 to 1857. Another grandson, James Uriah Adams (1812–1871), was also a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. He also went to Yale University.

Joel's grandson, James Pickett Adams (1828–1904), was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. He was also a Major in the Confederate States Army.

His grandson, Robert Adams II, was a captain in the Confederate Army. His life story was even made into a movie called The Last Confederate: The Story of Robert Adams.

Later Generations

Joel's great-grandson, Warren Adams (1838–1884), was a high-ranking officer in the Confederate Army. He was a lieutenant colonel and led the First South Carolina Infantry Regiment at Battery Wagner. Warren graduated from The Citadel in 1859. He was also in charge of the student cadets there.

Another great-grandson, Henry Walker Adams (1852-1903), also served in The South Carolina House of Representatives.

Dr. Edward Clarkson Leverett Adams (1876–1946) was a writer and doctor from South Carolina. He was a great-great-great grandson of Joel Adams. He also served in The South Carolina House of Representatives. He wrote several books, including Tales of the Congaree. The famous African American writer, Langston Hughes, visited E.C.L. Adams. Hughes said that Adams was "exactly my idea of what a true Southern gentleman should be."

A descendant named Weston Adams also served in the South Carolina House of Representatives. He later became a United States Ambassador for the country.

Joel Adams is buried at St. John's Congaree Episcopal Church. This church is located in Congaree, South Carolina.
