Joel Graham's Life and Music

Joel Graham was born on February 10, 1977, in Dewsbury, England. From a young age, his parents encouraged his love for music. They took him to rock concerts starting when he was just seven years old. He saw famous bands like Queen, Iron Maiden, and Bruce Springsteen.

Early Musical Journey

Joel began playing the bass guitar as his main instrument in 1988. He played in various local bands around the West Yorkshire area. In 1999, he moved to Nottingham. There, he helped create a stoner rock band called Ninedenine. This band released their well-received "Scars E.P." in 2001. During this time, Joel also worked at Earache Records. He helped manage orders for the record label's first online store.

Time in Canada

In May 2004, Joel Graham moved to Kenora, which is in Northwest Ontario, Canada. While living there, he spent time volunteering with the First Nations community.

Joining the Band Evile

On December 16, 2009, it was announced that Joel Graham would join Evile. He replaced Mike Alexander, the band's original bassist, who had passed away earlier that year. Joel played his first show with Evile on January 14, 2010, in Cardiff. This was also the same day his daughter was born. After a long tour across the United States in 2010, he started recording Evile's third album. This album was called Five Serpent's Teeth. It was the first Evile album to feature Joel as the bass player.

Writing for Magazines

In early 2014, Joel Graham started writing for Bass Guitar Magazine. He became a reviewer and a contributing writer for the publication.

Joel Graham's Playing Style

Joel Graham uses two main ways to play the bass guitar. He uses both his fingers and a pick (called a plectrum). He prefers to play using his fingers.

Finger-Picking Techniques

Joel mostly uses an alternate two-finger style. This means he uses his index and middle fingers. For faster songs, like "Descent into Madness" and "Long Live New Flesh," he uses a speedy three-finger roll style. This technique was made famous by the bassist Billy Sheehan.

Using a Plectrum

Joel uses a pick for all the songs that were originally played by Mike Alexander. He has mentioned in interviews that he wanted to play those songs exactly as Mike did.

Musical Influences

Joel Graham has been inspired by many other bass players. Some of his influences include Steve Harris, John Entwistle, Cliff Burton, Billy Sheehan, Les Claypool, Scott Reeder, Pat Badger, Frank Bello, and John Deacon.
