Joel Graham's Early Life and Music Journey
Joel Graham was born on February 10, 1977, in Dewsbury, England. His parents strongly encouraged him to enjoy music from a young age. They took him to rock concerts when he was just 7 years old. He saw famous bands like Queen, Iron Maiden, and Bruce Springsteen.
Joel started playing the bass guitar in 1988. He played in local bands around the West Yorkshire area. In 1999, he moved to Nottingham. There, he helped form a band called Ninedenine. This band released an EP (a short album) called Scars in 2001. During this time, he also worked at Earache Records. He helped process orders for their first online store.
In May 2004, Joel moved to Kenora in Northwest Ontario, Canada. While there, he spent time volunteering with the First Nations community.
Joining the Band Evile
On December 16, 2009, Joel Graham was announced as the new bassist for the band Evile. He took the place of Mike Alexander, who was a founding member of the band. Joel played his first show with Evile on January 14, 2010, in Cardiff. This was also the same day his daughter was born!
After a long tour across the United States in 2010, Joel started recording Evile's third album. This album was called Five Serpent's Teeth. It was the first Evile album to feature him as the bass player. However, a special edition of their album Infected Nations released in 2010 included live songs where he played bass.
Writing for a Magazine
In early 2014, Joel Graham started working for Bass Guitar Magazine. He became a reviewer and writer for the magazine.
Joel Graham's Playing Style
Joel Graham uses two main ways to play the bass guitar. He uses both his fingers (called finger-picking) and a small plastic pick (called a plectrum). He prefers to use his fingers.
Joel often uses a two-finger picking style. This means he uses his index and middle fingers. For faster songs, like "Descent into Madness," he uses a speedy three-finger roll style. This style was made famous by another famous bassist named Billy Sheehan. When he plays songs that were originally performed by Mike Alexander, he uses a plectrum. He has said in interviews that he wants to play those songs exactly as Mike Alexander did.
Musical Influences
Joel Graham has been inspired by many other bass players. Some of the bassists he looks up to include Steve Harris, John Entwistle, Cliff Burton, Billy Sheehan, Les Clayclaypool, Scott Reeder, Pat Badger, Frank Bello, and John Deacon.
