Joes Creek: A Small Stream with a Big Journey
Joes Creek might be small, but it's an important part of a much larger water system. It's found in the eastern part of Lincoln County, West Virginia. If you were near Tornado, Joes Creek would be about 4.4 miles away.
Where Does Joes Creek Start?
Every stream has a beginning, and Joes Creek starts near a place called Sumerco. Much of its water comes from the rain and melting snow that runs off Sumerco Mountain. Think of it like water trickling down a slide.
Another smaller stream, called Laurel Fork, also adds its water to Joes Creek. This helps Joes Creek grow as it flows along.
Where Does Joes Creek Go?
From its start, Joes Creek mostly flows towards the north. It travels for a bit until it meets Trace Fork. Joes Creek joins Trace Fork from the southeast, about 0.8 miles (1.3 km) from Garretts Bend.
Part of a Bigger River System
Even though Joes Creek is a small stream, its water travels a long way! Once its water joins Trace Fork, it then flows into the Mud River. From the Mud River, the water continues its journey into the Guyandotte River.
Next, the Guyandotte River flows into the mighty Ohio River. Finally, the Ohio River empties into the huge Mississippi River. This means that a raindrop that falls into Joes Creek could eventually make its way all the way to the Gulf of Mexico!

Did you know that the upper part of Joes Creek used to have a different name? Long ago, people sometimes called it Williams Fork. However, that name isn't used much anymore, and most people today know it only as Joes Creek.
