Johannesburg is a small community in Kern County, California. It is located in a mining area called the Rand Mountains. Johannesburg is about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Randsburg. It sits at an elevation of 3,517 feet (1,072 meters).
From 1897 to 1933, the Randsburg Railway ended here. This made Johannesburg an important transport hub. In 2020, the population of Johannesburg was 113 people. Locals often call the town "Jo-burg."

History of Johannesburg
Johannesburg was created to help the mining operations in nearby Randsburg. It was important because it offered rail access. It also had the first water wells in the area.
Gold and Silver Mining
In the early 1900s, the Rand Mining District was California's main gold-producing area. The famous Yellow Aster Mine was found here in 1894. Later, in 1919, the Rand Silver Mine was discovered. This mine produced more silver than any other in California.
How Johannesburg Got Its Name
Miners who had worked in the gold fields of South Africa named Johannesburg. They named it after the city of Johannesburg in South Africa. That region is known as the Witwatersrand, or "the Rand."
First Post Office
The first post office in Johannesburg opened in 1897. This helped the growing mining community.
