John Abraham (born 17 December 1972) is a famous Indian actor and film producer. He works mainly in Hindi films, which are movies made in India. He is well-known for playing strong action heroes.
John Abraham has won a National Film Award and has been nominated for many Filmfare Awards. Since 2017, he has been on Forbes India magazine's list of the top 100 celebrities.
He started his career as a successful model. He became very popular with the action film Dhoom (2004). He also starred in popular comedies like Garam Masala (2005) and Dostana (2008). He acted in serious dramas too, such as Water (2005) and New York (2009).
Later, John Abraham had big hits with action movies like Race 2 (2013) and Satyameva Jayate (2018). His movie Pathaan (2023) is his highest-earning film so far.
Besides acting, John Abraham also produces films through his company, J.A. Entertainment. His first film as a producer, Vicky Donor (2012), won a National Film Award. John Abraham was born in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, India. His birthday is on 17 December 1972. His family has a mix of different cultures and religions.
His father is a Malayali Syrian Christian from Kerala. His mother is an Irani Zoroastrian. Many of her relatives live in Iran. John's Zoroastrian name is "Farhan," but he was given the name "John" when he was baptised. He has a younger brother named Alan Abraham.
John Abraham grew up in Mumbai. He went to Bombay Scottish School and then Jai Hind College. He also earned an MBA degree from NMIMS, Mumbai. He considers himself a spiritual person, but he does not follow any specific religion.
How John Abraham Started His Career
Modelling and First Acting Roles (1999–2003)
John Abraham began his career as a model. He appeared in a music video for the song "Surma" by singer Jazzy B. He also worked for media companies before becoming a full-time model.
In 1999, he won the Gladrags Manhunt Contest. He then went to the Philippines for Manhunt International, where he won second place. After this, he modelled in Hong Kong, London, and New York City. He also appeared in many TV commercials and music videos for famous singers. To improve his acting, he took classes at the Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting Institute.
In 2003, John Abraham made his acting debut in the horror film Saaya. Critics praised his performance, saying he acted like an experienced actor. That same year, he starred in Paap and Lakeer – Forbidden Lines.
Becoming a Star (2004–2009)
In 2004, John Abraham played the main villain, Kabir, in the action film Dhoom. This movie was a huge hit and was the third highest-grossing film of the year. His role in Dhoom earned him a nomination for a Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role.
In 2005, he acted in the action thrillers Elaan and Karam. He also appeared in the comedy Garam Masala, which did well. Later that year, he was in Water. In 2022, he produced, wrote, and acted in the science-fiction action film Attack: Part 1. Critics praised the action scenes and his performance, but the film did not do well at the box office. His second film in 2022 was the thriller Ek Villain Returns, which received mixed reviews and was not a big success.
His first film of 2023 was the action thriller Pathaan, where he starred alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. This movie is part of the YRF Spy Universe. Pathaan was released on 25 January 2023 and broke many box office records. It became the biggest opening day and opening weekend for a Bollywood film. Critics highly praised John Abraham's performance. Pathaan earned over 10 billion rupees worldwide.
John Abraham's upcoming films include Tehran and The Diplomat. He will also star in "Vedaa" (2024), a crime-action thriller.
John Abraham as a Producer
John Abraham started his journey as a film producer with Vicky Donor (2012). This film starred Ayushmann Khurrana and was a big success with both critics and audiences. John Abraham even had a special dance number in the film.
His second film as a producer was Madras Cafe (2013), which also received excellent reviews. In 2018, he produced a Marathi film called Savita Damodar Paranjpe. In 2022, his company produced a Malayalam movie called Mike.
Personal Life
John Abraham is married to Priya Runchal. She is an Indian-American financial analyst. They met in Mumbai in December 2010 and got married on 3 January 2014. Priya Runchal is also the chairperson of the football team NorthEast United FC.
John Abraham is known for being very fit and healthy. He is also a big collector of sport bikes.
