John Arnot Jr. was an American politician who lived from 1831 to 1886. He served as a U.S. Representative for New York State. This means he was a lawmaker in the United States Congress.

Early Life and Education
John Arnot Jr. was born in Elmira, New York, on March 11, 1831. He went to private schools in his hometown. Later, he started attending Yale College, a famous university. However, he left before finishing his studies to begin working in business.
Political and Business Career
After his father passed away, John Arnot Jr. began working in banking in Elmira. He became very involved in his community.
Local Leadership Roles
Arnot served as the president of the village of Elmira from 1859 to 1864. He was also president of the village's board of trustees in 1859, 1860, and 1864. He married Ann Elizabeth Hulett, and they had three children: John Hulett, Edward Munson, and Matthias Charles.
Service During the Civil War
During the American Civil War, Arnot helped the Union Army. He served as an Army paymaster in Elmira. His job was to make sure soldiers were paid. He held the rank of major.
Mayor of Elmira
When Elmira became a city, John Arnot Jr. was elected mayor. He served as mayor three times: in 1864, 1870, and 1874. He was a popular leader in his city.
Becoming a U.S. Representative
In 1882, Arnot was first offered the chance to run for Congress. He said no at first, but later accepted the nomination. He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth Congress. He represented New York's twenty-ninth district. Later, he was elected to the Forty-ninth Congress for New York's twenty-eighth district. He served in Congress from March 4, 1883, until his death.
Later Life and Legacy
John Arnot Jr. died in Elmira, New York, on November 20, 1886. He was 55 years old. He is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira.
Arnot was an active member of Trinity Church (Elmira, New York). After his death, a special chapel was built at the church in his family's honor. His sister, Mariana Tuttle Arnot Ogden, gave money for the chapel. She was also a major supporter of the Arnot Ogden Hospital in Elmira.
