John Chiles was born on October 9, 1988. He is a former American professional football player. He played as a wide receiver. Chiles started his professional career in 2011. He was signed by the New Orleans Saints. Before that, he played college football at the University of Texas.
Chiles also played for several other teams. These included the St. Louis Rams, Jacksonville Sharks, Toronto Argonauts, Chicago Bears, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Early Life and High School Football
John Chiles grew up in Arlington, Texas. He went to Mansfield Summit High School. He was a top player in high school football. He was named an All-American before going to college. Chiles was also the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his district twice. He was a good student too, making the honor roll four times.
Playing Multiple Positions
During his three years as a starter, Chiles played both quarterback and wide receiver. In his last two years of high school, he gained many yards. He passed for over 2,000 yards. He also ran for over 1,200 yards. Plus, he caught passes for nearly 700 yards. He finished his high school career in the 2007 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
High School Achievements
Many sports experts thought Chiles was a great player. ESPN and Dave Campbell's Texas Football listed him as a top recruit. Athlon Sports ranked him as the 31st best recruit in 2007. Besides football, Chiles also played basketball for three years. He was also on the track and field team for two years.
College Football Career
John Chiles played college football at the University of Texas. He was with the Longhorns from 2007 to 2010.
Starting as a Quarterback
When he first started, Chiles was expected to take a year off from playing. This is called a "redshirt" year. However, an injury to another player meant he had to play. He became the backup quarterback. In his first two years, he played in 18 games. He ran the ball more often than he threw it. He ran for 322 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. He also threw for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns. He even caught one pass for 9 yards.
Bowl Game Success
In 2007, he played in the 2007 Holiday Bowl. He scored a touchdown in that game. In 2008, he helped his team win a share of the Big 12 South title. They also went to the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, which they won.
Switch to Wide Receiver
Before the 2009 season, Chiles changed positions. He moved from quarterback to wide receiver. Over the next two seasons, he caught 63 passes. He gained 737 yards and scored 4 touchdowns as a receiver. He also ran the ball twice for 18 yards.
In his junior year, the Longhorns won the Big 12 championship. They also played in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game. Chiles missed some games due to an ankle injury. He was healthy for the championship game but did not play.
Senior Year and Graduation
In his senior year, Chiles missed the Texas Tech game due to another injury. The Longhorns had a tough season, finishing with a 5-7 record. Despite this, Chiles had his best receiving game. He caught 5 passes for 117 yards against Iowa State.
Chiles earned a degree in corporate communications. He was also on the UT Athletic Director's Honor Roll for his good grades.
Professional Football Career
After college, John Chiles began his professional football journey.
New Orleans Saints
Chiles was not chosen in the 2011 NFL Draft. However, the New Orleans Saints signed him as a free agent on July 27, 2011. This happened after a player lockout ended. He was released by the team on August 30, 2011.
St. Louis Rams
On November 30, 2011, Chiles joined the practice squad of the St. Louis Rams. He became a free agent at the end of that season. The Rams signed him again in January 2012, but he was released in February.
Toronto Argonauts
Chiles then moved to the Canadian Football League (CFL). On May 10, 2013, he signed with the Toronto Argonauts. Over the 2013 and 2014 seasons, he was a key player. He caught 73 passes for 1,200 yards. He also scored 9 touchdowns. He helped the Argonauts reach the 2013 Eastern Conference finals.
Chicago Bears
On January 27, 2015, Chiles signed a contract with the Chicago Bears. He was injured during training camp. He was released by the team on August 30, 2015.
Saskatchewan Roughriders
On February 9, 2016, Chiles signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL. He played with them until August 24, 2016, when he was released.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Finally, on September 1, 2016, Chiles signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, another CFL team.
