John Egbert Farnum was an American soldier. He was born in New Jersey on April 1, 1824. He became a general in the United States Army. He fought in two important wars: the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. He passed away in New York City on May 16, 1870.

Early Life and Military Beginnings

John Farnum grew up in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. When he was young, he worked as an Overland express rider. This meant he delivered messages and packages across long distances.

Serving in the Mexican-American War

In 1846, Farnum joined the army. He became a sergeant-major in the 1st Pennsylvania Infantry. He served throughout the Mexican–American War. After this war, he joined other expeditions. He was part of the Lopez expedition to Cuba in 1850. He also took part in William Walker's expeditions in Nicaragua.

Civil War Service

When the American Civil War began, John Farnum joined the Union Army. He became a major in the 70th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This regiment was led by General Sickles.

Gallantry in Battle

Farnum showed great bravery in many battles. He was promoted to colonel of his regiment. At the Battle of Williamsburg on May 5, 1862, he was badly wounded. However, he recovered and returned to fight. He took part in major battles like Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. His name can still be seen at the Graffiti House in Brandy Station, Virginia.

Later Service and Promotion

Because of his wounds, Colonel Farnum could no longer serve actively in combat. He then became the colonel of the 11th regiment of the veteran reserve corps. He held this position until the war ended.

For his brave and excellent service, President Andrew Johnson honored Farnum. On February 21, 1866, he was nominated to become a brevet brigadier general of volunteers. This promotion was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 10, 1866. Farnum officially left the U.S. Volunteers on June 30, 1866.

Later Life and Passing

After his military career, Farnum worked as an inspector of customs in New York City. He held this job until he passed away. John Farnum died in New York City on May 16, 1870. He was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
