John Evans was a Welsh surgeon and a map-maker, also known as a cartographer. He was born on July 4, 1756, and passed away in October 1846.

Early Life and Education

John Evans was born on July 4, 1756. His birthplace was Llwyn-y-groes, a place near Llanymynech. This area is right on the border between Montgomeryshire in Wales and Shropshire in England.

His father was also named John Evans, and he was a famous map-maker. Young John Evans went to school at Westminster School. Later, he studied at the University of Oxford. He joined Jesus College, Oxford in 1773.

University Studies

John Evans studied hard and earned several degrees from Oxford. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1778. A year later, in 1779, he earned his Master of Arts degree. He then got a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1783 from St Alban Hall.

After his studies at Oxford, he went to the University of Edinburgh. There, he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree. This meant he was now a qualified surgeon.

Career and Family Life

After finishing his education, John Evans lived in Shrewsbury for a while. In 1795, his father passed away. John then moved back to his family home at Llwyn-y-groes.

Continuing His Father's Work

John Evans's father had made some of the best maps of North Wales. These maps were known for being very detailed and accurate. They were considered the best until the Ordnance Survey started making maps.

Around 1799, John Evans decided to republish his father's maps. This was a big achievement. He even received an award of 45 guineas from the Royal Society of Arts. A guinea was an old British coin. In 1802, he released another version of the maps. This new edition included some recently built roads.

Other Interests and Family

Besides map-making, John Evans had other interests. He was very interested in bees. He even wrote a long poem about them called The Bee.

John Evans was married to Jane Wilson. They had a large family together. They had five sons and four daughters. One of their sons, Robert Wilson Evans, became a respected scholar. He was a Fellow and tutor at Trinity College, Cambridge. He also became an archdeacon in Westmorland.

John Evans passed away in October 1846. He died at his son Robert's house in Heversham.
