John Fullerton MacArthur Jr. (born June 19, 1939 – died July 14, 2025) was an American pastor, teacher, and author. He founded Grace to You, a program that shares Bible teachings on radio and TV. He was the pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, from 1969 until his death. He also served as chancellor emeritus of The Master's University and The Master's Seminary.

MacArthur was known for his style of teaching the Bible, called expository preaching. This means he explained the Bible verse by verse. Christianity Today recognized him as one of the most important Christian preachers of his time. He wrote or edited over 150 books. His MacArthur Study Bible, which includes his notes, sold more than a million copies. In 2021, he helped create the Legacy Standard Bible (LSB), an updated version of the NASB '95.

Early Life and Education

John MacArthur was born in Los Angeles on June 19, 1939. His grandfather was an Anglican minister, and his father, Jack MacArthur, was also a Baptist radio preacher. John was distantly related to General Douglas MacArthur.

He attended Bob Jones University from 1957 to 1959. After a year off, he went to Los Angeles Pacific College in 1960. In 1964, he earned a Master of Divinity degree from Talbot Theological Seminary.

Career Highlights

While at college, John MacArthur sang in a group called Voice of Calvary. This group was often heard on Christian radio. From 1964 to 1966, he worked with his father as an associate pastor. This was at the Harry MacArthur Memorial Bible Church in Burbank, California.

In 1969, MacArthur became the pastor at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley. He was the youngest pastor the church had ever had. His radio and TV program, Grace to You, started by sharing his sermons. These sermons were first broadcast on radio in 1977.

In 1985, MacArthur became the president of Los Angeles Baptist College. This school is now known as The Master's University. The next year, in 1986, he also became the president of The Master's Seminary. On June 5, 2011, he finished a 42-year project. He had preached through every book of the New Testament at Grace Community Church.

Key Beliefs and Teachings

John MacArthur held several important beliefs about Christianity. These beliefs shaped his teaching and writing.

Understanding Spiritual Gifts

MacArthur believed in something called cessationism. This idea says that certain "sign gifts" mentioned in the Bible, like prophecy or speaking in tongues, were only for a special time. He believed these gifts were given to the apostles to prove the Bible's truth. Once the time of the apostles ended, these gifts were no longer given.

He was a strong voice against the idea that these gifts still happen today. This idea is called continuationism. He wrote books and held conferences to explain his views.

Views on Gender Roles

MacArthur believed that the Bible teaches different roles for men and women. This view is called Complementarianism. He thought that the Bible does not allow women to preach to men or have authority over men in churches. He believed that only men should be elders or pastors. He based this on passages from the Bible like 1 Timothy 2:11–12 and 1 Corinthians 14:34–35.

Belief in Creation

MacArthur supported Young Earth creationism. This belief states that the Earth was created by God in six literal days, as described in the Bible. He wrote a book called The Battle For the Beginning about this topic. He believed that the idea of evolutionary theory goes against what the Bible teaches. He saw it as a conflict between faith in the Bible and other ideas.

Recognition and Media

John MacArthur received honorary degrees from Grace Graduate School in 1976 and Talbot Theological Seminary in 1977. He spoke at many important Christian events and conferences. These included the Shepherd's Conference and the Sing! Conference.

He also appeared on various news programs and documentaries. He was a guest on shows like CNN's Larry King Live, The Ben Shapiro Show, and FOX News.

Personal Life

When he was younger, MacArthur hoped to play professional football. However, a serious car accident at age 18 changed his path. He then focused on studying the Bible.

In 1963, John MacArthur married Patricia Sue Smith. They lived in southern California. They had four children: Matt, Marcy, Mark, and Melinda. They also had fifteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Illness and Passing

In January 2023, MacArthur was diagnosed with a heart condition called atrial fibrillation. He had surgery to help with this. In July 2023, he had another procedure. He was away from public ministry for a few weeks to recover.

In the second half of 2024, he had three more surgeries. These included a procedure on his aorta and his lungs. He returned to public ministry briefly in November 2024. However, his recovery was slower than expected. On January 6, 2025, it was reported that he had been in the hospital for two weeks. He had some issues with his heart, lungs, and kidneys.

On July 13, 2025, it was announced that MacArthur had pneumonia. He was not expected to recover. He passed away the next day, July 14, at a hospital in Santa Clarita, California. He was 86 years old.
