John Fraser (born around 1823, died 1878) was an important American soldier and teacher. He led two big universities. From 1866 to 1868, he was the third president of Pennsylvania State University. He also served as the second Chancellor of the University of Kansas from 1867 to 1874.

Early Life and Education
John Fraser was born in Cromarty, Scotland. He went to Aberdeen University in Scotland. There, he earned a special degree in mathematics.
After finishing his studies, Fraser moved to Bermuda to teach. Later, he moved to New York City. In New York, he became the head of a private school. In 1851, he moved to Pennsylvania. He started teaching mathematics at Jefferson College.
Service in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, John Fraser joined the Union Army. He enlisted in 1862 with the 140th Pennsylvania Infantry. He quickly moved up in rank.
He became the colonel of his regiment. Colonel Fraser fought in the famous Battle of Gettysburg. His regiment was in a tough area called the Wheatfield. When other senior officers were hurt, Fraser took charge.
Later, during the Siege of Petersburg, he was captured. He became a prisoner of war. He was held in Charleston, South Carolina.
Military Honors and Leadership
After the war, John Fraser was recognized for his bravery. On January 13, 1866, President Andrew Johnson honored him. Fraser was given the rank of brevet brigadier general. This special rank was given to him for his service during the war.
Leading Universities
After his military service, Fraser became a leader in education. He was chosen to be the third president of Pennsylvania State University. He served in this role from 1866 to 1868.
At the same time, he also became the second Chancellor of the University of Kansas. He led the University of Kansas from 1867 to 1874. John Fraser was a dedicated educator and a respected leader.
