John Hammond (born August 17, 1827 – died May 28, 1889) was an American businessman, soldier, and politician. He was born in Crown Point, New York. Hammond was a member of the Republican Party. He served as a U.S. Representative for New York's 18th congressional district. He held this position from 1879 to 1883.

Early Life and Adventures

John Hammond was born on August 17, 1827, in Crown Point, New York. His parents were Jane Renne and Charles F. Hammond. His father owned important lumber and iron businesses in Crown Point.

John went to public schools in Crown Point, Panton, Vermont, and St. Albans, Vermont. He graduated from the academy in St. Albans. He also attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

After college, he worked at his family's store in Crown Point. In 1849, he moved to California during the California Gold Rush. He returned to Crown Point after a few years. He then continued to work in his family's businesses.

Military Service in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began, John Hammond helped raise a group of soldiers. This group became Company H of the 34th New York Volunteer Infantry.

Later, he helped create a cavalry company. He joined this unit as a private soldier. This unit became Company H of the 5th New York Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. The soldiers chose Hammond to be their leader, making him a captain.

During the war, he fought in several battles. These included the Second Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Cedar Mountain. He was wounded twice during his service. He eventually became the commander of the 5th New York Cavalry. He held the rank of colonel.

After the war, he received the honorary rank of brigadier general. This was to recognize his excellent service. Hammond was active in groups for Civil War veterans. These included the Grand Army of the Republic and the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. The GAR post in Crown Point was named after him.

Life After the War

After the Civil War, Hammond went back to Crown Point. He took over his family's businesses. He brought his family's iron company together with several others. He became the president of the new Crown Point Iron Company.

He was also involved in other projects. He served as president of the Whitehall and Plattsburgh Railroad. Hammond also owned a farm. He raised cattle and horses there.

He was a leader in his community and a generous person. He gave money to or helped build several local places in Crown Point. These included the Congregational church and the town library.

Political Career

In 1866, Hammond was elected as one of three New York State Prison Inspectors. He held this job from 1867 to 1869.

He was a delegate at the 1872 Republican National Convention. This meeting chose Ulysses S. Grant to run for president a second time.

In 1878, Hammond was elected to represent New York's 18th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served in the 46th and 47th United States Congresses. His term was from March 4, 1879, to March 3, 1883.

In 1884, he was a delegate again at the Republican National Convention. He supported James G. Blaine for president.

Later Life and Family

John Hammond passed away in Crown Point on May 28, 1889. He was buried at Forest Dale Cemetery in Crown Point.

In 1852, he married Charlotte Maria Cross. They had seven children together. Six of their children lived to be adults.
