John Richard Handy III (born February 3, 1933) is an American jazz musician. He is best known for playing the alto saxophone. He also sings and plays other instruments like the tenor and baritone saxophones, saxello, clarinet, and oboe.

John Handy was born in Dallas, Texas, United States. He became well-known in the 1950s while working with the famous musician Charles Mingus.
His Music Groups
In the 1960s, John Handy led his own music groups. One of his most famous groups was a quintet. A quintet is a group of five musicians. This group included Michael White on violin, Jerry Hahn on guitar, Don Thompson on bass, and Terry Clarke on drums.
Their performance at the 1965 Monterey Jazz Festival was recorded and released as an album. John Handy even received nominations for a Grammy Award for two of his songs, "Spanish Lady" and "If Only We Knew."
Education and Teaching
After finishing high school in Oakland, John Handy studied music at San Francisco State College. He took a break to serve during the Korean War. He graduated in 1958 and then moved to New York City.
John Handy has also shared his musical knowledge with others. He taught music history and performance at several universities. These include San Francisco State University, Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Later Career and Family
In the 1980s, John Handy worked on a project called Bebop & Beyond. This group recorded special albums to honor other jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk.
John Handy's son, John Richard Handy IV, is also a musician. He is a drummer and has played with his father sometimes. In 2009, John Handy received the Beacon Award from SF JAZZ, which is a special honor for his contributions to jazz music.

John Handy has recorded many albums throughout his long career. He has released albums as a band leader and has also played with other famous musicians. Some of his notable albums include Recorded Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Hard Work, and Carnival. He also played on several albums with Charles Mingus, including Mingus Ah Um.
