John Jefferson Williams: The Last Soldier of the Civil War
John Jefferson Williams was born in 1843 in Jay County, Indiana. When he was about 20 years old, he joined the Union Army in September 1863. He likely joined in Anderson.
Training and Service
After joining, Williams moved to Camp Joe Holt. This was a place where soldiers trained before they were sent out to fight. His army unit, the 34th Regiment Indiana Infantry, spent most of the war on guard duty. They were stationed in the Western part of the United States. This included places like New Orleans.
In the spring of 1865, his unit joined the army that was getting ready to go into Texas. Their mission was to take control of Texas.
The Last Battle
John Jefferson Williams first saw real fighting at the Battle of Palmito Ranch. This battle happened near Brownsville, Texas. Sadly, he died there on May 13, 1865.
The Battle of Palmito Ranch was the very last land battle of the American Civil War. Because he died in this battle, John Jefferson Williams is generally known as the last soldier killed in action during the entire war.
Some people believe another soldier, Corporal John W. Skinner, might have been the last. He was killed a few days later in an ambush. However, Williams is the one most often remembered for this sad distinction.
Where He Rests
John Jefferson Williams is buried in the Alexandria National Cemetery. This cemetery is located in Pineville, Louisiana. You can find his grave in section B, plot 797.
