John James McCook (February 21, 1806 – October 11, 1865) was an important leader of the Fighting McCooks. This was a very famous family in the history of the United States Army. John James McCook was born in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. His birthday was February 21, 1806. His parents were George and Mary McCormack McCook. He went to Jefferson College to study medicine.
Life in Ohio
John's older brother, Daniel, moved to eastern Ohio in 1826. He settled in a town called Carrollton. Soon after, John McCook also moved to Ohio. He started his own medical practice. First, he worked in New Lisbon. Later, he moved his practice to Steubenville.
John married Catherine Julia Sheldon. She was from Hartford, Connecticut. He was in charge of the Sunday School at the First Church of Steubenville for many years.
Service During the Civil War
During the American Civil War, John James McCook helped the Union Army. He worked as a volunteer surgeon. This means he was a doctor who helped wounded soldiers.
He died shortly after the war ended. He was visiting his son, General Anson G. McCook, in Washington, D.C.. John James McCook passed away on October 11, 1865. He was buried at Union Cemetery in Steubenville. His wife, Catherine, had died just seven months before him.
