John Lyons (1824 – 20 April 1867) was a very brave soldier from County Carlow, Ireland. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award for bravery in the face of the enemy for British and Commonwealth soldiers. It's given for amazing acts of courage during wartime.

A Brave Act in the Crimean War

John Lyons was about 32 years old during the Crimean War. He was a private in the 19th Regiment of Foot, a part of the British Army.

In 1855, a dangerous event happened during the Siege of Sevastopol in Crimea. A live cannon shell landed right among the soldiers guarding the trenches. This was extremely dangerous!

Private Lyons quickly grabbed the live shell. He bravely threw it over the wall of the trench. This quick action saved many lives that day. Because of his incredible bravery, he was given the Victoria Cross.

Life After the War

After the Crimean War, John Lyons continued his military service. He later fought in the Indian Mutiny, another important conflict. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal.

John Lyons passed away in Naas, County Kildare, on April 20, 1867.
