John Platt (born January 11, 1632 – died November 6, 1705) was an important early settler of Norwalk, Connecticut. A settler was someone who moved to a new place to live and build a community. He was a member of the General Court of the Colony of Connecticut. This was like the government's law-making group. He represented Norwalk in several sessions between 1678 and 1694.
Who Was John Platt?
John Platt was born in Ware, England. His parents were Richard Platt and Mary Wood. He grew up and later became a respected leader in the new American colonies.
Moving to Norwalk
John Platt first lived in Milford. Later, he moved to Norwalk, Connecticut. He received grants of land there in 1660, 1663, and 1672. A land grant was a gift of land from the government. This helped him establish his home and farm.
A Community Leader
John Platt was a very active member of his community. He was a deacon in the church at Norwalk. A deacon is a person who helps lead the church and its community activities. He also worked as a husbandman, which means he was a farmer.
He was also a sergeant in the Norwalk Train Band. A Train Band was like a local militia or a group of citizen soldiers. They helped protect the town.
Helping Plan New Towns
John Platt helped plan new towns in Connecticut. In 1680, he was one of three commissioners chosen to lay out a new settlement. This new area was located north of Stamford. A commissioner is someone appointed to a special task or duty.
In 1687, he was again chosen as a commissioner. This time, he helped plan the town of Danbury. These roles show how much the community trusted him. He helped shape the early growth of Connecticut.
