John Stuart, Lord Mount Stuart (born September 25, 1767 – died January 22, 1794), was a British politician. He was a member of the Tory Party. This party was one of the main political groups in Britain at the time.

Early Life and Family Connections
John Stuart was born in Grosvenor Square, London, in 1767. His father was John Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute. His grandfather was John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, who had been a Prime Minister of Great Britain. John's mother was Charlotte Jane. She was the daughter of Herbert Windsor, 2nd Viscount Windsor.
Education and Growing Up
John Stuart went to two important schools. First, he studied at Eton. After that, he attended St John's College, Cambridge, a famous university. These schools helped prepare him for a life in public service.
His Political Career
In 1790, John Stuart became a Member of Parliament (MP). This meant he was elected to represent the area of Cardiff in the British Parliament. He held this important job until he died in 1794.
Other Important Roles
Besides being an MP, John Stuart had other big responsibilities. In 1791, he became the Colonel of the Glamorgan Militia. This was a local military force. Then, in 1793, he was made Lord-Lieutenant of Glamorganshire. This was a royal representative in the county. He held both these roles until his death.
Family Life and Children
Lord Mount Stuart married Lady Elizabeth McDouall-Crichton. She was the daughter of Patrick McDouall-Crichton, 6th Earl of Dumfries. They got married on October 12, 1792.
His Sons
John and Elizabeth had two sons:
- John Crichton-Stuart, 2nd Marquess of Bute (born August 10, 1793 – died March 18, 1848)
- Lord Patrick James Herbert Crichton-Stuart (born August 25, 1794 – died September 7, 1859)
In 1805, both sons added "Crichton" to their last name. Lord Patrick also received a special rank in 1817. This rank was given because his father, John Stuart, would have become a Marquess if he had lived longer.
Later Life and Passing
Lord Mount Stuart died on January 22, 1794. He was only 26 years old. His death happened at Bassingbourn Hall, near Stansted, Essex. He passed away about a month after he was hurt in a fall from his horse. His wife, Lady Mount Stuart, died three years later in July 1797, at the age of 24.
