John William Robinson Parker (born October 6, 1857 – died February 24, 1938) was a British soldier and a historian who loved old things (called an antiquarian). He owned a historic house called Browsholme Hall and had a special role as the Honorary Bowbearer of the Forest of Bowland in Lancashire.

Early Life and Family

John William Robinson Parker was the second son of Thomas Goulbourne Parker. His family lived at Browsholme Hall and also in Newton, Yorkshire. They also had homes in Alkincoats and Colne in Lancashire.

When his older brother, Edward Parker, passed away in 1894, John inherited Browsholme Hall. This also meant he became the Honorary Bowbearer of the Forest of Bowland. He was a cousin of another well-known antiquarian, Thomas Lister Parker.

Military Service and Public Roles

John Parker joined the Lancashire Militia in 1876. This was a type of local army. He later became a very important leader. He commanded 800 soldiers in the 3rd Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment. These soldiers served in the Second Boer War in South Africa.

He was also considered to become a politician for the Conservative Party. He held several important public jobs. He was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB). This is a special honor given for great service.

He also served as a Justice of the Peace (JP). This meant he helped keep law and order in his local area. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant (DL) for Lancashire. This was a role that supported the King's representative in the county. From 1913 to 1914, he was the High Sheriff of Yorkshire, a very old and respected position.

A Love for History

John Parker was very passionate about history. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. These are groups for people who study history and old objects.

He was involved in many historical societies. He was the President of the Harleian Society and the Yorkshire Archaeological Society. He also led the Yorkshire Parish Register Society.

In Lancashire, he was a key member of several groups. He was President of the Chetham Society and the Lancashire Parish Register Society. He also served as Vice-President of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society. He helped publish many old records from the Middle Ages. John Parker passed away on February 24, 1938.

Family Life

On April 11, 1896, John Parker married his first cousin, Gertrude Marion Beatrice Burn-Murdoch. She passed away on September 12, 1927. They had one son together, named Robert Goulbourne Parker, who was born in 1900.
