Biography
Early Life and Joining the Franciscans
John was born in Fermo, Italy, in 1259. Even as a young boy, he was very religious and devoted to God. At the age of ten, he joined a group of priests called canons regular at a church in Fermo.
However, John wanted to live an even simpler and stricter life. So, when he was thirteen, he decided to join the Franciscan Order. This order was started by Francis of Assisi. John was greatly inspired by another Franciscan friar named James of Fallerone.
Life on Mount La Verna
Soon after he officially became a Franciscan friar, John was sent to Mount La Verna in Tuscany. This mountain is very important to the Franciscans. John spent many years there living alone, praying, and thinking deeply about God. He had many special spiritual experiences and visions.
Preaching and Miracles
Later in his life, John began to travel and preach to people. He shared his faith in many towns across northern and central Italy. Some of these towns included Florence, Pisa, Siena, Arezzo, and Perugia. Many people believed that he performed miracles.
John was also a close friend of the famous poet, Jacopone of Todi. It is said that John appeared in a special, spiritual way to give Jacopone his last prayers before he died in 1306.
Final Years and Death
People believe that John wrote a special prayer called the Preface for the Mass of St. Francis.
While traveling to Assisi, John felt that he was going to die soon. So, he returned to Mount La Verna, the mountain he loved so much. He passed away there in 1322 at the age of 63.
Veneration
Honoring Blessed John
John was buried on the holy mountain of La Verna. Many people reported that miracles happened because of his prayers after his death. His small room, or "cell," where he lived on the mountain, is still shown to visitors today.
In 1880, Pope Leo XIII officially recognized John's holy life. This means he was declared "Blessed" by the Roman Catholic Church.
Feast Day
The Franciscan Order celebrates Blessed John of La Verna on August 9th each year. This day is his feast day.
