Playing Career

Early Career Steps
Johnny Oduya started playing hockey with Hammarby IF in Sweden as a junior. When he was 19, in 2000, he moved to North America. There, he played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He played for the Victoriaville Tigres and Moncton Wildcats.
After one season, he returned to Sweden. He played two more seasons for Hammarby. Then, he joined Djurgårdens IF in the Elitserien, Sweden's top league. During this time, he was known as a tough defenceman. He sometimes got into fights and spent a lot of time in the penalty box.
Even so, he was a very reliable player. He often played for the Swedish national team. In 2005, the Washington Capitals, who had drafted him in 2001, let him go. He then joined another Swedish team, Frölunda HC. With Frölunda, he played a more offensive role, scoring 8 goals and 11 assists.
Joining the New Jersey Devils
In the 2006–07 season, Oduya signed with the New Jersey Devils in the NHL. Many thought he would be a backup player. But when several of the team's defencemen got hurt, Johnny got a chance to play. He played surprisingly well in the NHL. He often played for nearly 20 minutes each game.
He played in 76 games that season, only missing eight due to an injury. However, in the 2007 Stanley Cup playoffs, he did not play much. This was because a new defenceman, Andy Greene, played very well. After several good seasons in the NHL, Oduya was chosen to play for Sweden. He played in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
Time with Atlanta and Winnipeg
On February 4, 2010, Johnny Oduya was traded to the Atlanta Thrashers. He moved with Niclas Bergfors, Patrice Cormier, and a draft pick. In return, the Devils received Ilya Kovalchuk and Anssi Salmela. Oduya played for the Thrashers.
Later, the Thrashers team moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. They became the Winnipeg Jets. Oduya continued to play for the team in their first season in Winnipeg.
Winning the Stanley Cup with Chicago

On February 27, 2012, Oduya was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks gave up two draft picks for him.
In October 2012, during an NHL player lockout, Oduya went to Bangkok, Thailand. He played for a local team called the Flying Farangs. He helped his team win their first championship in a tournament there.
In June 2013, Oduya won his first Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks. They beat the Boston Bruins in six games in the Finals. In the final game, Oduya helped set up the winning goal. His shot bounced off another player's stick. Then, Dave Bolland pushed the puck past the Bruins' goalie to win the Cup!
On June 15, 2015, Oduya won his second Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks. They beat the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games. This was the Blackhawks' third Stanley Cup win in just six years.
Playing for the Dallas Stars
After four seasons with the Blackhawks, Oduya became a free agent. This means he could sign with any team. On July 15, 2015, he signed a two-year contract with the Dallas Stars. His former Blackhawks teammate, Patrick Sharp, also joined the Stars around the same time.
Later Years in the NHL
In his last year with the Stars, during the 2016–17 season, Oduya was traded back to Chicago. He played 15 more games for the Blackhawks.
After leaving Chicago for the second time, Oduya signed a one-year contract with the Ottawa Senators in July 2017. Later, on February 26, 2018, the Philadelphia Flyers claimed him. He played only one game for the Flyers before getting injured. His contract then ended, and he did not play again.
Personal Life
Johnny Oduya's father is from Kenya, and his mother is from Sweden. He is the younger brother of Fredrik Oduya. Fredrik was also a hockey player who was drafted by an NHL team. He was known as a tough player in the minor leagues.
