Early Life and Education

Jonah Goldberg was born in New York City on March 21, 1969. His mother, Lucianne Goldberg, was a literary agent. His father, Sidney Goldberg, was an editor. Jonah was raised in a Jewish home.

After high school in 1987, Goldberg went to Goucher College in Towson, Maryland. He studied political science and earned his bachelor's degree in 1991. Goucher College used to be a women's college, and Goldberg was in the second group of men to attend.

While at college, he was very involved in student politics. He also co-edited the school newspaper, The Quindecim, for two years. He was one of the first men to run the paper. Later, he worked as an intern for several news companies.

Career Beginnings

After college, Goldberg taught English in Prague for a short time. In 1992, he moved to Washington, D.C. He started working at the American Enterprise Institute, a research organization. There, he worked for Ben J. Wattenberg, helping with his newspaper column and book. He also worked on several TV documentaries for PBS.

In 1994, Goldberg became a founding producer for Wattenberg's show, Think Tank with Ben Wattenberg. He then joined New River Media, a TV production company. He worked on many TV projects in the United States, Europe, and Japan. He also wrote and produced two documentaries: Gargoyles: Guardians of the Gate and Notre Dame: Witness to History.

He joined National Review as an editor in 1998. Later that year, he helped launch National Review Online (NRO). This was a sister publication to National Review. He served as editor of NRO for several years.

Media Appearances and Views

Goldberg often writes about topics like freedom, how government works, and the Constitution. He has criticized the ideas of some liberals and Democrats. He also has disagreements with libertarians. During the Trump presidency, his writings became critical of the Trump movement. He also criticized the Republican Party.

He supported the Iraq War and has suggested American military action in other parts of the world. He has also defended historical colonialism in some places, like Africa. He once suggested that U.S. involvement could help solve problems there. Even when he said the Iraq war was a mistake in 2006, he called it a "noble" mistake.

Goldberg has also criticized the idea of "social justice". He says it can mean "anything its champions want it to mean."

Discussions with Others

Goldberg has had public disagreements with people on the political left. For example, he debated Juan Cole about U.S. policy in Iraq. He also had discussions with Air America Radio commentators.

Views on Fox News

Goldberg has said that Fox News leans to the political right. He noted that this is mainly in its opinion shows. However, he also said that liberals sometimes have a double standard. He argued that they criticize Fox News for editorializing but not MSNBC hosts like Keith Olbermann.

During the Trump years, Goldberg became more understanding of criticisms against Fox News. This was especially true for opinion hosts like Tucker Carlson. On November 21, 2021, Goldberg and his colleague Steve Hayes left Fox News. They protested the network's support for Tucker Carlson's Patriot Purge. They called the documentary "a collection of incoherent conspiracy-mongering."
