Jorge R. Gutierrez (born January 25, 1975) is a super talented Mexican-American artist! He's an animator, a painter, and even a voice actor. You might know his amazing work from shows like El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera on Nickelodeon or the beautiful movie The Book of Life. He also created the awesome Netflix series Maya and the Three. Jorge loves to share his passion for Mexican culture through his art. He often works with his wife, Sandra Equihua, who is also a fantastic artist.

Early Life and Creative Start

Jorge Gutierrez was born in Mexico City in 1975 and grew up in Tijuana, Mexico. From a young age, he loved exploring Mexican pop culture and folk art. This love became a big part of his unique artistic style.

He went to the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), a famous school for artists. There, he studied animation and made a cool 3D short film called Carmelo. This film won a Student Emmy Award in 2001 and was even shown at the Cannes Film Festival! After school, Jorge worked with famous animators like Maurice Noble and Chuck Jones, learning from the best.

Bringing Characters to Life

Jorge has helped design characters for many popular animated shows. He worked on Nickelodeon's ChalkZone and ¡Mucha Lucha! for Kids' WB. He also contributed to Cartoon Network's Class of 3000 and Disney's The Buzz on Maggie. For his work on The Buzz on Maggie, he was nominated for an Annie Award, which is a big award in animation. He also wrote for shows like Maya & Miguel and Brandy & Mr. Whiskers.

Major Projects and Awards

El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera

One of Jorge's most famous projects is El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. He created this show with his wife, Sandra Equihua. It's about a superhero kid named Manny Rivera who has to choose between being good or evil. The show won two Annie Awards and an Emmy Award in 2008 for its amazing animation and character designs. Sandra also won an Emmy for her designs!

The Book of Life

In 2014, Jorge directed and co-wrote the animated movie The Book of Life. This beautiful film tells a Romeo and Juliet-style love story set during Mexico's "Day of the Dead" celebrations. It was a huge success and earned Jorge his first Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. He was also nominated for three Annie Awards for the film.

Son of Jaguar and Netflix Works

Jorge continued to create unique projects, including Son of Jaguar, a virtual reality (VR) short film for Google in 2016. This film also received Annie and Emmy nominations.

In 2020, Jorge signed a big deal with Netflix Animation. For Netflix, he directed a music video for the Emmy-winning series We the People. He also created, wrote, and directed the incredible nine-episode animated series Maya and the Three. This series won several Annie and Emmy Awards for its writing, music, and animation. It tells the story of a brave Mesoamerican princess who goes on an epic adventure.

Personal Life

Jorge Gutierrez didn't speak until he was five years old. As an adult, he learned that he has autism, a condition that affects how people communicate and interact. He found this out after his own son was diagnosed with autism.
