José Antonio Bowen, born on March 11, 1962, is an American writer and educator. He was the 11th president of Goucher College from 2014 to 2019.

José Bowen's Early Life and Schooling

José Bowen was born in Woodland, California. His parents were Wayne Bowen and Celina Antonio. For his first six years, he lived near Madrid and Barcelona in Spain. He also spent time growing up in Atlanta and Italy.

When he was six, his family moved to Fresno, California. He lived there for the rest of his childhood. José's father's family is Ashkenazi Jewish. His mother's family is Afro-Cuban.

High School and College Achievements

In high school, José was the best student in his class. He graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He then went to Stanford University.

At Stanford, he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He also earned two master's degrees in music and humanities. In 1994, he completed his doctorate degree. This degree was in musicology and humanities.

José Bowen's Career in Education

José Bowen started his teaching career in 1982. He worked as a lecturer at Stanford University, his old school. In 1994, he helped start a new center. This was the Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music. It was at the University of Southampton in England.

Later, he became the first Caestecker Chair of Music at Georgetown University. There, he created and led the Department of Performing Arts. From 2004 to 2006, he was the Dean of Fine Arts at Miami University. In 2006, he became the Dean of the Meadows School of the Arts. This school is part of Southern Methodist University.

Leading Goucher College

In 2014, José Bowen was chosen to be the 11th president of Goucher College. He took over from Sanford J. Ungar. As president, he worked to make the college better.

He changed the admissions process to welcome more different students. He also updated the school's courses. He improved the campus buildings and added new facilities. In 2017, he chose not to take a pay raise. He also agreed to stay at Goucher until June 2022.

However, in October 2018, Bowen announced he would leave early. He resigned as president on June 30, 2019. Bryan Coker became the acting president, followed by Kent Devereaux. He later shared that he felt "burned out" from leading a small college. It was a challenging job with money problems.

Music and Books by José Bowen

José Bowen is a talented jazz pianist. He has written many musical pieces inspired by Jewish traditions. These include a jazz Shabbat, which mixes jazz and klezmer music. He has also composed Hanukkah music. He has performed his jazz-style Shabbat music at synagogues.

He also wrote a Jewish choral music piece. It is called "Voice from the Attic." This work uses words from Anne Frank's famous diary.

His Contributions to Music and Writing

Bowen was part of the team for Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology. He helped write notes for the album. He also helped start the National Recording Preservation Board. This board works for the Library of Congress.

José Bowen has written over 100 scholarly articles. He also edited the 2003 book Cambridge Companion to Conducting. His book "Teaching Naked" came out in 2012.
