José Antonio Bowen (born March 11, 1962) is an American author and academic. He was the 11th president of Goucher College from 2014 to 2019.

Early Life and Education
José Antonio Bowen was born in Woodland, California. He lived outside Madrid and Barcelona in Spain until he was six years old. He also spent time growing up in Atlanta and Italy.
When he was six, his family moved to Fresno, California. He lived there for the rest of his childhood. His family background includes Ashkenazi heritage from his father's side. His mother's family is Afro-Cuban.
In high school, José was the best student in his class. He graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. He then went to Stanford University. There, he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He also received two master's degrees in music composition and humanities. He completed his doctorate in musicology and humanities in 1994.
Career in Colleges
José Bowen started his career in education in 1982. He worked as a lecturer at Stanford University, where he had studied.
In 1994, he became the first director of a new center. This was the Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music. It was located at the University of Southampton in the UK. Later, he became the first special music professor at Georgetown University. At Georgetown, he helped create the Department of Performing Arts. He also led this department.
From 2004 to 2006, Bowen was the Dean of Fine Arts at Miami University. In 2006, he became the Dean of the Meadows School of the Arts. This school is part of Southern Methodist University.
Leading Goucher College
In 2014, the leaders of Goucher College chose José Bowen as their new president. He was the eleventh president of the college. He took over from Sanford J. Ungar.
During his time at Goucher, Bowen started many new projects. He worked to change how students were accepted into the college. This was to help bring in more different kinds of students. He also updated the school's classes and improved the campus buildings.
In 2017, Bowen decided not to take a pay raise. He also agreed to stay at Goucher until June 2022. However, in October 2018, he announced he would leave early. He resigned as president of Goucher on June 30, 2019. Bryan Coker became the acting president, followed by Kent Devereaux. Bowen later shared that he felt "burned out" from leading a small college. He said it was tough dealing with money problems for five years.
Music and Books
José Bowen is a skilled jazz pianist. He has written many musical pieces inspired by Jewish traditions. These include a jazz Shabbat, which mixes jazz and klezmer music. He has also composed Hanukkah music. He has performed his jazz-style Shabbat at synagogues.
He also wrote a Jewish choral music piece called "Voice from the Attic." This work uses text from Anne Frank's famous diary.
Bowen was part of the team that created Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology. He also helped start the National Recording Preservation Board. This board works for the Library of Congress.
He has written over 100 scholarly articles. In 2003, he edited a book called Cambridge Companion to Conducting. His book "Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology Out of Your College Classroom Will Improve Student Learning" came out in 2012. This book won him the 2014 Frederic W. Ness Book Award. In 2017, he co-wrote another book called "Teaching Naked Techniques: A Practical Guide to Designing Better Classes."
Awards and Recognition
José Bowen has received several honors for his work. He was given a special fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He also became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
In 2010, Stanford University honored him as a Distinguished Alumni Scholar. In 2018, he received the 8th annual Ernest L. Boyer Award. This award is given by the New American Colleges and Universities.
