José María Justo Cos y Macho (born August 6, 1838 – died December 17, 1919) was an important Spanish Cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop of Valladolid from 1901 until he passed away. He became a Cardinal in 1911.

A Life of Service

Early Life and Education

José Cos was born in Terán, a small town in Cabuérniga, Cantabria, Spain, on August 6, 1838. He was baptized just three days later. He went to school at the Jesuit School in Segura. Later, he studied at the Seminary of Monte Corbán in Santander. He also attended the University of Salamanca, where he earned a special degree called a doctorate in theology.

Becoming a Priest and Bishop

José Cos became a priest in September 1862. After finishing his studies in 1864, he taught at the Conciliar Seminary of Santander for a few years. In 1865, he became a canon at the Cathedral of Oviedo.

On June 10, 1886, Pope Leo XIII chose him to be the Bishop of Mondoñedo. He officially became a bishop on September 12, 1886. Later, he was promoted to Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba in 1889.

Serving in Important Roles

From 1891 until his death, José Cos served as a senator for the Spanish Kingdom. This meant he helped make laws for the country. He was also named Bishop of Madrid-Alcalá in 1892. In 1901, he became the Archbishop of Valladolid.

Becoming a Cardinal

On November 27, 1911, Pope Pius X made him a Cardinal Priest. This is a very high rank in the Catholic Church. As a Cardinal, he was able to help choose the next Pope. He took part in the 1914 papal conclave, which chose Pope Benedict XV.

Cardinal Cos passed away from bronchopneumonia in Valladolid on December 17, 1919, at 81 years old. He is buried in the main cathedral of Valladolid.
