Josep Maria Jujol Gibert (born September 16, 1879 – died May 1, 1949) was a talented Spanish architect from Catalonia. He didn't just design buildings; he also created furniture and paintings! Jujol is famous for working with the well-known architect Antoni Gaudí on many amazing projects. Some of his most famous works include Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, Park Güell, and the Our Lady of Montserrat church. He often used styles like Modernisme and Art Nouveau in his designs.

Josep Maria Jujol's Life Story

Growing Up in Tarragona

Josep Maria Jujol was born in Tarragona, Spain, in 1879. He lived there until he was nine years old. His father, Andreu Jujol, was a school director. Josep was born right on the top floor of the Sant Joan public school where his dad worked.

From a young age, Josep loved to draw. He also really admired nature. Stories say he would explore the hills around Tarragona and look at its old Roman ruins. In 1888, his family moved to Gràcia, which is now part of Barcelona.

In 1893, Jujol's family moved again, this time to the city of Barcelona. There, he loved walking through the old medieval parts of the city. He became very interested in gothic architecture and started drawing the buildings. His family then moved to the Gran Via in the Eixample District, where he saw many modern and modernist buildings.

In 1901, Josep was accepted into the architecture program in Barcelona. While studying, he worked with an architect named Antoni Maria Gallissa i Soqué. Jujol's first project was to help decorate a street for a festival. He designed metal frames and stained glass windows for it. He continued working for Gallissa until 1903.

After that, he joined the studio of Josep Font i Gumà. There, he helped create the Trinity altar in the Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar. In his free time, he even drew plans for an amusement park that would look like the solar system! But this park was never built.

Starting His Own Work

In 1906, Josep Maria Jujol officially became an architect and could start his own projects. One of his first jobs was to decorate the entrance stairs of his old boss, Don Antoni. He used a special technique called sgraffito to create patterns.

Jujol met the famous architect Antoni Gaudí through a friend. Soon, they started working together. Their first project was the amazing Casa Batlló. Some people think Jujol had a big influence on Gaudí's use of bright colors and unique shapes, but we can't be completely sure. What is certain is that Gaudí respected Jujol's ideas a lot. He trusted Jujol to help him on many projects for years.

Josep Maria Jujol passed away in Barcelona in 1949.
