Bishop Joseph Hubert Reinkens

Joseph Hubert Reinkens (born March 1, 1821 – died January 4, 1896) was the very first German Old Catholic bishop. He played a big role in creating and organizing the Old Catholic Church in Germany.

Who Was Joseph Reinkens?

Joseph Hubert Reinkens was born in Burtscheid, which is now part of Aachen, Germany. His father was a gardener. When his mother passed away in 1836, Joseph had to work hard to help his many brothers and sisters.

Early Life and Education

Even with his family duties, Joseph was determined to learn. In 1840, he went to a gymnasium (a type of high school) in Aachen. After that, he studied theology (the study of religious faith) at the universities of Bonn and Munich. He became a priest in 1848. In 1849, he earned his doctor's degree in theology. Soon after, he became a professor of church history at the University of Breslau. In 1865, he became the rector (head) of the university. During this time, he wrote many important papers.

Standing Up for Beliefs

In 1870, a big discussion happened about whether the pope was infallible (meaning he could not be wrong on matters of faith and morals). Reinkens did not agree with this idea. He wrote several pamphlets about church traditions and the council's process. When the idea of papal infallibility was officially declared, Reinkens joined other important theologians. They decided to resist this new rule. He signed the Declaration of Nuremberg in 1871. He also took part in important meetings in Bonn in 1874 and 1875.

Becoming a Bishop

The Old Catholics decided to separate from the Roman Catholic Church. In 1873, Joseph Reinkens was chosen to be their bishop in Germany. This happened at an excited meeting in Cologne. In August of that same year, he was consecrated (officially made a bishop) by Dr. Heykamp, who was the bishop of Deventer.

Leading the Old Catholic Church

Bishop Reinkens worked very hard in his new role. Because of his efforts, the Old Catholic movement became an organized church. It gained official status in different German states. After becoming a bishop, he wrote more theological books. One of his most important works was about Cyprian and the Unity of the Church (1873).

Important Actions and Travels

A key moment in his time as bishop was in 1876. He consecrated Dr. Eduard Herzog to be the bishop of the Old Catholic Church in Switzerland. In 1881, Reinkens visited England. There, he shared Holy Communion with bishops, clergy, and members of the Church of England. In 1894, he defended the validity of Anglican orders. This means he supported the idea that Anglican priests and bishops were properly ordained. He passed away in Bonn on January 4, 1896.
