Joseph Rea Reed (born March 12, 1835 – died April 2, 1925) was an important person in Iowa's history. He was a judge on the highest court in Iowa, served one term as a U.S. Representative for Iowa, and was even the chief judge of a special federal court. He was a member of the Republican Party.

About Joseph Rea Reed
Early Life and Education
Joseph Rea Reed was born in Ashland County, Ohio, on March 12, 1835. He went to regular schools and then attended the Vermillion Institution in Hayesville, Ohio, from 1854 to 1857.
In 1857, he moved to Adel, Iowa. He studied law and became a lawyer in 1859. He worked as a lawyer in Adel until 1861.
Serving in the Civil War
In July 1861, when the American Civil War began, Joseph Reed joined the army. He became a first lieutenant in the 2nd Iowa Independent Battery Light Artillery. In October 1864, he was promoted to captain. He served in the war until June 10, 1865.
After the war, he went back to being a lawyer in Adel.
Political Career in Iowa
Joseph Reed became involved in politics. He served as a member of the Iowa Senate in 1866 and 1868. In 1869, he moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa.
In 1872, he became a judge. He worked as a district court judge from 1872 to 1884. Then, he was chosen to be a justice on the Iowa Supreme Court, which is the highest court in the state. He served there from January 1, 1884, until he resigned on February 28, 1889. For two months, he was even the chief justice of the court.
Serving in Congress
In 1888, Joseph Reed was chosen by the Republican Party to run for the U.S. House of Representatives. He ran for Iowa's 9th congressional district. He won the election and served in the Fifty-first Congress.
He was a U.S. Representative from March 4, 1889, to March 3, 1891. However, he was not re-elected in 1890. He lost to Thomas Bowman, a Democrat.
Chief Justice of a Special Court
In June 1891, President Benjamin Harrison chose Joseph Reed for a very important job. He became the chief justice of a new court called the United States Court of Private Land Claims. This court was created to decide land claims in areas that became part of the U.S. after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. These areas included New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, and Wyoming.
He served on this special court from 1891 to 1904. After that, he went back to being a lawyer in Council Bluffs.
Later Life
Joseph Rea Reed passed away in Council Bluffs on April 2, 1925. He was buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
