Joseph ben Solomon Ṭaiṭazaḳ (Hebrew: יוסף בן שלמה טאיטאצק), also known as MahaRITaTS, was an important talmudic scholar and kabalist who lived in Salonica during the 1400s and 1500s. He was a member of the Taitazak family.

In 1492, Joseph, along with his father and brother Judah ben Solomon Taitazak, moved from their home country of Spain to Salonica. This move happened because Jewish people were forced to leave Spain at that time. In Salonica, Joseph became a respected rabbi.

Life of Joseph Taitazak

Joseph Taitazak was seen as one of the most mysterious Kabbalists of his time. He was also a leading rabbinical figure in important cities like Jerusalem and Damascus. He studied "magic squares," which are special grids of numbers that people believed held deep, hidden meanings and could be used in amulets. Many other famous Kabbalists of his time, like Rabbi Joseph Tirshom and Rabbi Isaiah Horowitz, wrote about his ideas on magic squares and how they related to the mysteries of creation.

Joseph was a very strong believer in the Kabbalah, which is a form of Jewish mysticism. He lived a very simple and strict life. For example, Eliyahu de Vidas shared that for forty years, Joseph never slept in a bed, except on Shabbat nights. Instead, he slept on a box with his feet on the ground.

Because of his deep interest in mysticism, Joseph was drawn to the ideas of Solomon Molcho, who believed he was the Jewish messiah. Joseph supported Molcho when he was teaching in Salonica in 1529. Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan noted that Joseph Taitazak seemed to be influenced by the teachings of Abraham Abulafia, another well-known Kabbalist.

Joseph was also considered one of the greatest Talmud scholars of his time. Even Joseph Caro, a very famous Jewish legal scholar, respected Joseph's authority. Some of Joseph's well-known students included Isaac Adarbi, Samuel di Medina, and Shlomo Halevi Alkabetz.

Joseph Taitazak's Writings

Joseph Taitazak wrote several important books and commentaries:

  • Leḥem Setarim: This work included commentaries on the Book of Daniel and the Five Scrolls. It also had commentaries on Psalms, the Book of Job, and the Book of Proverbs.
  • A commentary on the Sayings of the Fathers, which is a collection of ethical teachings.
  • Responsa: These were answers to questions about Jewish law. Some of his answers were included in the writings of other scholars and his students.

  • According to Isaac Adarbi, Joseph also wrote new insights on the works of Isaac Alfasi, another important Jewish legal scholar.
