Relatives Scott Drinkwater (brother)

Joshua Drinkwater (born 15 June 1992) is an Australian rugby league player. He plays as a halfback (SH) or five-eighth (SO). Currently, he plays for Oldham RLFC in the RFL Championship.

He has played for several teams. These include the St. George Illawarra Dragons and Wests Tigers in Australia's NRL. He also played for the London Broncos, Leigh Centurions, Catalans Dragons, and Hull Kingston Rovers in the Super League in England. Drinkwater helped the Catalans win the 2018 Challenge Cup.

Josh Drinkwater was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. His family has German roots. He is the brother of another rugby league player, Scott Drinkwater. Scott plays for the North Queensland Cowboys in the National Rugby League.

Josh started playing junior rugby league for the Terrigal Sharks. He played alongside his best friend, Josh English. Later, he was signed by the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

Playing Career Highlights

Early Career: Youth Competition

From 2010 to 2012, Drinkwater played for the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles' youth team. This team was part of the National Youth Competition (NYC).

In 2012, he was Manly's top point-scorer in the NYC. He scored 137 points. This included 10 tries, 48 goals, and 1 field goal.

In September 2012, he signed a two-year contract. This was with the St. George Illawarra Dragons. He joined them in 2013.

Drinkwater made his first National Rugby League (NRL) appearance in 2013. This was in Round 5 for the St. George Illawarra Dragons. They played against the Newcastle Knights.

He played in four games during his first year in the NRL.

Time with the London Broncos

In February 2014, Drinkwater moved to the London Broncos. He joined them for the rest of the season. He was released from his contract with St. George Illawarra.

He scored 136 points for the London Broncos. However, the team only won one game that Super League season.

Joining the Wests Tigers

In November 2014, he signed a two-year contract with the Wests Tigers. He started playing for them in 2015.

Drinkwater was brought in as a backup player. The main halfbacks were Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks. He knew his role was to be ready if needed.

In July 2015, Drinkwater made his Tigers debut. This was in Round 17 against the Parramatta Eels.

Moving to Leigh Centurions

In May 2016, he left the Wests Tigers. He joined the Leigh Centurions in the Championship.

Drinkwater helped his new club get promoted in 2016. They moved back to the top league in English rugby. He stayed with the Leigh Centurions for two years. He left after they were moved down from the Super League in 2017. This happened after a loss to the Catalans Dragons.

In April 2018, Drinkwater signed a one-year deal. He joined the Catalans Dragons.

On 25 August 2018, Drinkwater was part of a big win. The Dragons won their first-ever 2018 Challenge Cup Final. They played against the Warrington Wolves.

Drinkwater started the game as a halfback. He kicked four goals, scoring 8 points. This helped the team win 20–14. It was a historic moment for the club.

Time with Hull Kingston Rovers

In December 2018, he signed a one-year deal. He joined Hull Kingston Rovers in the Super League.

He received the number 24 jersey in January 2019. Drinkwater played his first game for Hull Kingston Rovers on January 13, 2019. It was a friendly match against the Widnes Vikings. His new team won 30–16.

Drinkwater's first official game for the club was in Round 1 of the 2019 Super League season. He scored 6 points with his kicks. His team won 18–16 against their rivals, Hull F.C.. He also won the 'Man of the Match Award' from Sky Sports.

On March 10, 2019, Drinkwater played his 100th career game. This was in a 6–10 win against Wakefield Trinity. In April 2019, he scored his first try for Hull Kingston Rovers. This was in a 45-26 home win against the Leeds Rhinos.

He scored two tries on May 31, 2019. This was in a Challenge Cup Quarter Final game. Hull Kingston Rovers lost 22-28 to the Warrington Wolves.

Returning to Catalans Dragons

In October 2019, it was announced that Drinkwater was re-joining Catalans Dragons.

On October 9, 2021, Drinkwater played for Catalans in the 2021 Super League Grand Final. They lost to St. Helens.

Playing for Warrington Wolves

In November 2022, Drinkwater signed a two-year deal. He joined Warrington.

He played 24 games for Warrington in the 2023 Super League season. Warrington finished sixth and made the playoffs. Drinkwater played in their playoff loss against St Helens.

On June 8, 2024, Drinkwater played in Warrington's 2024 Challenge Cup final. They lost to Wigan. He played 23 games for Warrington in the 2024 Super League season. The club reached the semi-final but lost to Hull Kingston Rovers.

Current Club: Oldham RLFC

On November 27, 2024, it was announced that Josh Drinkwater signed a one-year deal. He joined Oldham RLFC in the RFL Championship.
