Josiah Livingston's Military Service
Josiah Livingston played an important role in the American Civil War. This war was fought between the northern states (the Union) and the southern states (the Confederacy) from 1861 to 1865.
Joining the Union Army
In June 1862, Josiah Livingston joined the 9th Vermont Infantry. This was a group of soldiers from Vermont. He started as a first lieutenant, which is an officer rank.
A year later, he became the regimental adjutant. This job meant he helped the commander with important tasks and paperwork for the regiment.
Rising Through the Ranks
Livingston continued to serve with dedication. In November 1864, he was promoted again. He became a Captain, which is a higher officer rank. He served in the Union Army until 1865.
