Joy A. Crisp is an amazing planetary scientist who studies Mars geology. She is well-known for her important work on NASA missions that explore Mars, like the Mars Exploration Rovers and the Mars Science Laboratory.
Joy Crisp's Early Life and Education
Joy Crisp was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She loved learning about rocks and the Earth. In 1979, she earned her first degree in geology from Carleton College.
She continued her studies at Princeton University, where she earned two more degrees: a Master's in 1981 and a PhD in 1984. After that, Dr. Crisp worked as a researcher at UCLA for over two years. There, she studied rocks from the Canary Islands. She looked at them under conditions similar to what you would find inside volcanoes!
Joy Crisp's Career at NASA
Since 1989, Dr. Crisp has been a researcher at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). JPL is a special place where NASA builds and controls many of its robotic spacecraft. Since 2004, she has been a principal scientist there, which means she leads important research projects.
Dr. Crisp has worked on many exciting NASA missions to Mars. These include the Mars Pathfinder mission, the Mars Exploration Rovers (like Spirit and Opportunity), and the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL). She is currently the deputy project scientist for the MSL mission, which includes the famous Curiosity rover. This means she helps guide the scientific goals and discoveries of the Curiosity rover as it explores the Red Planet!
