Joy A. Crisp is a planetary geologist. This means she is a scientist who studies the geology of planets, especially Mars. She is well-known for her important work on NASA missions to Mars. These missions include the Mars Exploration Rovers and the Mars Science Laboratory.

Becoming a Scientist
Joy Crisp was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She loved learning about rocks and the Earth. In 1979, she earned her first degree in geology from Carleton College.
She continued her studies at Princeton University. There, she earned both her Master's degree in 1981 and her PhD in 1984. After that, she spent over two years as a researcher at UCLA. During this time, she studied rocks from the Canary Islands. She looked at them under conditions similar to those found inside volcanoes.
Exploring Mars with NASA
Since 1989, Joy Crisp has been a researcher at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). JPL is a special center that builds and operates robotic spacecraft for NASA. She became a principal scientist there in 2004.
Crisp has worked on many exciting NASA missions to Mars. These include the Mars Pathfinder mission. She also worked on the Mars Exploration Rovers, which sent two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, to Mars.
The Curiosity Rover Mission
Joy Crisp is a key part of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission. This mission sent the Curiosity rover to Mars. She is the deputy project scientist for the Curiosity rover. This means she helps guide the scientific goals and operations of the rover.
For her amazing work on Curiosity, Joy Crisp has received several awards from NASA. She received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal in 2004. In 2013, she earned the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal. Most recently, in 2020, she was given the NASA Outstanding Public Leadership Medal. These awards show how important her contributions have been to exploring Mars.
