Joy Reid's Early Life
Joy-Ann Lomena was born in Brooklyn, New York City. Her father was from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Her mother was a college professor and a nutritionist from Guyana. Her parents met while studying at the University of Iowa. Joy Reid was raised in the Methodist faith. She has one sister and one brother.
Her father was an engineer. He was often away from the family. Her parents later divorced, and her father went back to the Congo. Joy Reid grew up mostly in Denver, Colorado. When she was 17, her mother passed away from breast cancer. Joy then moved to Flatbush, Brooklyn, to live with her aunt.
Joy Reid went to Harvard University. She graduated in 1991. She studied film studies there. In an interview, she shared that college was a big change. She went from a community that was mostly African American to one that was not. She learned to live with roommates and manage her own money. Joy Reid's Career in Media
Joy Reid started her journalism career in 1997. She left her job at a business company in New York. She moved to South Florida to work on a morning show.
