Joy-Ann M. Lomena-Reid, born on December 8, 1968, is an American television host and political commentator. This means she talks about politics on TV and shares her opinions. She was a national reporter for MSNBC, a news channel.

Early Life and Education

Joy-Ann Lomena was born in Brooklyn, New York City. Her father was from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Her mother was a college professor and a nutritionist from Guyana. Her parents met while they were studying at the University of Iowa.

Joy Reid was raised in the Methodist faith. She has one sister and one brother. Her father, an engineer, was not often with the family. Her parents later divorced, and her father went back to the Congo.

Joy grew up mostly in Denver, Colorado. When she was 17, her mother passed away from breast cancer. Joy then moved to Flatbush, Brooklyn, to live with her aunt. She graduated from Harvard University in 1991. She studied film there.

In an interview, Joy Reid shared that college was a big change for her. She went from a community that was mostly African American to one where only a small part was. She learned to live with roommates and manage her own money for bills and tuition. She felt it was a great experience for learning and growing.

Career Highlights

Joy Reid started her career in journalism in 1997. She left New York and a job at a business company. She began working in South Florida for a morning TV show on WSVN Channel 7.

In 2003, she took a break from journalism. She worked with a group called America Coming Together. This group was against the Iraq War and President George W. Bush. Later, she returned to broadcasting as a talk radio host. She also worked on Barack Obama's presidential campaign in 2008.

From February 2014 to February 2015, Joy Reid hosted her own show on MSNBC. It was called The Reid Report. The show ended in February 2015. After that, Reid became a national correspondent for MSNBC.

In May 2016, Reid started hosting AM Joy. This was a political talk show on MSNBC that aired on weekend mornings. She also often filled in for other MSNBC hosts. By 2018, her Saturday morning show had almost one million viewers each week.

In 2017, Joy Reid was one of the most talked-about journalists on Twitter. She was also credited with creating the term KHive. This term is used for supporters of Kamala Harris.

In July 2020, MSNBC announced that Reid would host The ReidOut. This was a new show that aired on weeknights. It made her the first Black female primetime anchor on cable news. The ReidOut aired its final episode in February 2025.

Joy Reid also teaches a class at Syracuse University in Manhattan. In this class, she explores topics like race, gender, and the media.

Personal Life

In 1997, Joy Reid married Jason Reid. Jason later became an editor for documentary films. Joy and Jason have three children together.
