Jozef Vengloš (born February 18, 1936 – died January 26, 2021) was a famous Slovak football player and manager. He was very smart and studied sports science and psychology at university. Because of his great knowledge, FIFA often asked him to teach at their football schools around the world.

Playing Football

Jozef Vengloš was born in Ružomberok, which was then part of Czechoslovakia and is now in Slovakia. He played as a midfielder for a team called Slovan Bratislava from 1954 to 1966. He even became the captain of the team. He also played for the Czechoslovakia B national team.

Sadly, his playing career ended early because he got sick with hepatitis. After he stopped playing, he started a new career as a football manager. He began in Australia, first managing a club team, and then the Australian national team. Later, he returned to Czechoslovakia to coach club teams and the Under-23 national team.

Coaching Career

Early Success in Czechoslovakia

In 1973, Vengloš became the manager of Slovan Bratislava. He was very successful there, winning the championship twice in just three years.

At the same time, from 1973 to 1978, he was also the assistant manager for the Czechoslovakia national team. He worked with the main manager, Václav Ježek. Together, they led the team to win the European Championship in 1976. This was a huge achievement! They beat the Netherlands in the semi-finals and West Germany in the final match.

Leading the National Team

From 1978 to 1982, Jozef Vengloš was the main manager of the Czechoslovakia national team. He guided them to third place in the 1980 European Championship. He also led them to the 1982 World Cup Finals, though they didn't get past the first round.

After that, he coached Sporting Lisbon in Portugal from 1983 to 1984. Then, he moved to Malaysia, where he coached the Kuala Lumpur FA club and the Malaysian national team.

In 1988, he was asked to manage the Czechoslovakia national team again. He took them all the way to the quarter-finals of the 1990 World Cup.

Managing in England and Turkey

After the 1990 World Cup, Vengloš made history by becoming the manager of Aston Villa in England. He was the very first manager born outside Britain or Ireland to lead a top-division English club. He stayed for one season, and then moved to Turkey to manage Fenerbahçe from 1991 to 1993.

He then became the first manager of the Slovakia national team from 1993 to 1995. After that, he managed the Oman national team from 1996 to 1997.

Time at Celtic

On July 17, 1998, Vengloš was appointed Head Coach of Celtic, a famous club in Scotland. His team played very well during the 1998–99 season. Even though they didn't win a trophy, fans remember him for bringing great players to the club. He signed Ľubomír Moravčík, who became a fan favorite, and Johan Mjällby, a club legend.

One of the most memorable moments of his time at Celtic was a huge 5–1 victory over their biggest rivals, Rangers. Later, in 1999, his team also managed a 2–2 draw against Rangers at their home stadium, Ibrox.

After one season, Vengloš left Celtic to become a technical adviser and scout for the club in Europe. He later managed the Japanese team JEF United Ichihara for a season in 2002.
