Juan Bautista Cabral (born June 24, 1789 – died February 3, 1813) was an Argentine soldier. He was part of the brave Regiment of Mounted Grenadiers. Cabral became famous for his heroic actions during the Battle of San Lorenzo. He saved the life of then Colonel Don José de San Martín, a very important leader in Argentina's fight for independence. Cabral's bravery made him a lasting hero in Argentine history.

Life and Heroism

Not much is known about Juan Bautista Cabral's early life. It is thought he was born in a town in Corrientes that now carries his name. In 1812, he joined the Granaderos Cavalry Regiment. This was a new and important military group. Some historians say he quickly became a corporal, then a sergeant. Others believe he was a private soldier during the battle. No matter his exact rank, his bravery was clear.

The Battle of San Lorenzo

Cabral's heroic act happened right at the start of the Battle of San Lorenzo. This battle was part of the Argentine War of Independence. Forces loyal to the Spanish Crown, called royalists, sailed up the Paraná River. They landed in San Lorenzo, in Santa Fe.

During the fight, enemy fire hit Colonel San Martín's horse. The horse fell, trapping the colonel underneath it. Royalist soldiers were charging forward with their bayonets. Cabral quickly got off his own horse. He rushed to help San Martín. He pulled the colonel free from under his horse.

Cabral's Sacrifice

The exact details of how Cabral was wounded are not fully known. Some stories say he placed himself between the enemy bayonets and San Martín. What is certain is that Cabral was badly hurt. He died soon after in the San Carlos Convent. This building was being used as a hospital for wounded soldiers. On his deathbed, he is said to have spoken his last words: "I die happy, General; we have beaten the enemy."

Legacy and Honor

After his brave actions in the battle, Juan Bautista Cabral was given the rank of sergeant. This was a special honor given after his death. Argentine history remembers him as a national hero. Many monuments have been built to honor him across Argentina.

The famous "San Lorenzo march" is dedicated to him. This march is often taught to children in primary schools. A well-known Paraguayan composer, Agustin Barrios Mangoré, also wrote a piece of music for him. The Argentine Army's school for non-commissioned officers (NCOs) is named in his honor. His heroic deeds are also remembered in music, including a tango and a chamamé.
