Juan Crisóstomo Falcón Zavarce (born January 27, 1820 – died April 29, 1870) was an important leader in Venezuela. He served as the President of Venezuela from 1863 to 1868. He was a member of the Liberal Party, which believed in more freedom and rights for people.
Falcón first tried to become president in 1859 as a rebel leader. However, his rebellion was stopped. He later became the official president in 1863. His time as president ended in 1868 because of a revolution led by General José Tadeo Monagas. After his presidency, Falcón moved to Europe. He passed away in Martinique in 1870. The Venezuelan state of Falcón is named after him.
Abolishing Capital Punishment
During Juan Crisóstomo Falcón's presidency in 1863, Venezuela made a big change. It became the first country in the world to stop using capital punishment for all crimes. Capital punishment means the death penalty. This was a very important step for human rights in Venezuela.
Personal Life and Family
Juan Crisóstomo Falcón Zavarce was married to Luisa Isabel Pachano Muñoz. She was the First Lady of Venezuela while he was president, from 1863 to 1868.
