Juan Fernando López Aguilar was born on June 10, 1961. He is a Spanish politician and a legal expert. He belongs to the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). Since 2009, he has been a member of the European Parliament. Before that, he served as the Minister of Justice in Spain. He also represented Las Palmas in the Spanish Parliament, called the Congress of Deputies, for several years.

Early Life and Education
Juan Fernando López Aguilar was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a city in Spain. He studied law and earned a special degree called a Ph.D. from the University of Bologna in Italy. For a long time, he was a professor teaching about constitutional law at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
He also earned another master's degree in law and diplomacy from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. To help pay for his studies, he worked as a caricaturist for newspapers and drew pictures for comic books.
His Political Journey
Serving in the Spanish Parliament (1996–2007)
Juan Fernando López Aguilar was a member of the Spanish Parliament. During his time there, he was the main spokesperson for his political group on topics related to home affairs. This means he spoke for his party on important issues happening within Spain.
Running for Leader of the Canary Islands (2006–2007)
In November 2006, López Aguilar was chosen to be the candidate for the Socialist party. He ran to become the President of the Government of the Canary Islands.
He won the elections in 2007. However, he did not get enough votes to form a government by himself. Other political parties worked together, which stopped him from becoming the leader of the region. After this, he was chosen to lead the PSOE party's list for the European elections in 2009.
Member of the European Parliament (2009–Present)
Juan Fernando López Aguilar has been a Member of the European Parliament since the elections in 2009. He is part of a special group called the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. He was the head of this committee during his first term until 2014, and again since 2019.
In this role, he has worked on important reports. For example, he wrote a report about fundamental rights in Poland in 2020. He also worked on reports about COVID-19 certificates in 2021.
He has also been involved in other important committees. He served on a special committee that looked into organized crime, corruption, and money laundering. He also joined a committee that investigated the Panama Papers and other ways people avoid paying taxes.
Since 2014, López Aguilar has also been a vice-chairman for the European Parliament's group that works with countries in Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. He has also helped monitor elections in other countries, like Ukraine in 2012 and Tajikistan in 2010.
