Designing for the Big Screen
Julie Harris was born in London in 1921. She started her career in 1947 at Gainsborough Pictures. Her first film was Holiday Camp. This movie later led to the popular Huggett family film series.
Early in her career, Julie learned a lot from another designer, Elizabeth Haffenden. She then worked for the Rank Organisation, a big film studio. She stayed there until the studio closed down in the 1950s.
For the next 30 years, Julie worked with many famous actors. These included Jayne Mansfield, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, and Roger Moore. She also worked with well-known directors like Alfred Hitchcock and John Schlesinger.
Famous Movie Costumes
Julie Harris designed costumes for many different types of films. She even made a "mink bikini" (which was actually made from rabbit fur) for actress Diana Dors.
She became very busy in the 1960s. She designed costumes for the Beatles' first two movies: A Hard Day's Night (1964) and Help! (1965).
Julie also worked on two James Bond films. She designed costumes for the official Bond movie Live and Let Die (1973), starring Roger Moore. She also worked on the James Bond spoof film Casino Royale (1967).
Another fun project was the Carry On movie Carry On Cleo (1964). This was a funny movie set in ancient Rome and Egypt. Many people say it's one of the best Carry On films.
Julie continued to design costumes for movies and later for TV films. She retired in 1991. She passed away on May 30, 2015, at the age of 94, after a short illness.
