Julien Escudé's Football Journey
Starting in France and Moving to Ajax
Julien Escudé was born in Chartres, France. He started his professional football career at AS Cannes. He played one season in France's second division league. On July 26, 1999, when he was 20 years old, he joined Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais FC. This team was managed by Paul Le Guen.
At Rennes, Julien slowly became a top player. He played almost 150 official games for the club. In the summer of 2003, Escudé moved to AFC Ajax in the Netherlands. He scored six goals in his first two seasons there. In his first year, 2003–04, he helped Ajax win the Eredivisie title, which is the top Dutch league. In August 2005, after a game against Feyenoord, he had some disagreements with his coach, Danny Blind. After that, he did not play any more matches for Ajax.
Success with Sevilla
In January 2006, Escudé joined Sevilla FC in Spain. He signed a contract for the rest of the 2005–06 season and three more years. His first game in La Liga, Spain's top league, was on February 11. He played for nine minutes in a 4–0 win against Cádiz CF. In the next game, he played the whole match as Sevilla won 1–0 against Celta de Vigo.
Julien became a key defender for Sevilla in the years that followed. He helped the team win five trophies in total. He played in the 2005–06 UEFA Cup final, where Sevilla won 4–0 against Middlesbrough from England. His first goal for Sevilla was on November 18, 2006. He scored the first goal in a 3–0 home win against Valencia CF.
Julien's importance grew even more when the team's captain, Javi Navarro, was out with a long injury. However, Julien himself also missed a lot of the 2007–08 season because of a groin problem. Sevilla finished fifth that season and missed out on playing in the UEFA Champions League.
In June 2007, Escudé signed a new contract with Sevilla for four more years. He signed another contract extension in 2012, which would have kept him at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium until 2013.
Playing for Beşiktaş and Retirement
On July 26, 2012, Escudé signed with Beşiktaş J.K. in Turkey. He joined them after ending his contract with Sevilla. After playing for two years in Istanbul, he decided to retire from football. He was 35 years old at the time, even though his old club Rennes was interested in him coming back.
Playing for France
In March 2005, Julien Escudé was called up to the French national team. This was for two qualifying games for the 2006 FIFA World Cup against Switzerland and Israel. However, he did not play in those games.
His first game for France was on October 11, 2006. He played as a left-back against the Faroe Islands. This game was part of the qualifying campaign for UEFA Euro 2008. After a season with many injuries, he was not chosen for the final Euro 2008 tournament.
On November 18, 2009, during a World Cup qualifying playoff game against the Republic of Ireland, Escudé broke his nose. He had to leave the game early. He was also not chosen for the French squad that played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Julien Escudé's Family
Julien Escudé's older brother, Nicolas, was a professional tennis player. Nicolas reached the top 20 in the world in 2000. Julien's father, Paul, who passed away in 1998, was also a footballer. He mainly played for and managed Pau FC.
During his time playing for Sevilla, Julien Escudé sometimes had "SQD" on the back of his shirt. This was a shorter, phonetic way to spell his last name.
