Julien Régis Paul Escudé (born August 17, 1979) is a French former professional football player. He mostly played as a central defender, which is like a strong protector in the middle of the defense. Sometimes he also played as a full back, covering the sides of the field.
Julien became well-known playing for Rennes in France. Later, he played for big clubs in other countries: Ajax in the Netherlands, Sevilla in Spain, and Beşiktaş in Turkey. He was a key player for Sevilla, helping them win six major trophies, including two UEFA Cups. He played 237 official games for Sevilla.
He also played 13 times for the French national team. Even though he was a talented player, he never got to play in a major international tournament like the World Cup.

Julien Escudé's Football Journey
Starting in France and Moving to Ajax
Julien Escudé was born in Chartres, France. He started his professional football career at AS Cannes. He played one season in the second division of French football.
In 1999, when he was 20, Julien joined Stade Rennais FC, a club in France's top league, Ligue 1. He played very well there and became a top player, appearing in almost 150 official games for the team.
In 2003, Julien moved to the Netherlands to play for AFC Ajax. He scored six goals in his first two years with the club. In his very first year, he helped Ajax win the Eredivisie title, which is the top football league in the Netherlands.
Great Success with Sevilla
In January 2006, Julien Escudé moved to Spain and joined Sevilla FC. He quickly became a very important defender for the team. He helped Sevilla win five major trophies during his time there.
One of his biggest achievements was helping Sevilla win the UEFA Cup twice in a row. He played in the final match in 2006, where Sevilla won 4–0 against Middlesbrough from England.
Julien scored his first goal for Sevilla in November 2006. He helped his team win 3–0 against Valencia CF. He signed new contracts to stay with Sevilla until 2013.
Playing for Beşiktaş and Retirement
In July 2012, Julien Escudé moved to Turkey to play for Beşiktaş J.K. in the Süper Lig. He played for two years in Istanbul.
After his time with Beşiktaş, he decided to retire from football at the age of 35. Some clubs, like his former team Rennes, were interested in him, but he chose to stop playing professionally.
Playing for France
Julien Escudé was called up to the French national team in March 2005. His first game for France was in October 2006, where he played as a left back against the Faroe Islands.
He played 13 times for his country. However, he faced some injuries that kept him from being chosen for major tournaments like the UEFA European Championship in 2008 or the FIFA World Cup in 2010.
Family Life
Julien Escudé comes from a family of athletes. His older brother, Nicolas, was a professional tennis player. Nicolas was ranked among the top 20 tennis players in the world in 2000.
Julien's father, Paul, who passed away in 1998, was also a footballer. He played and managed for a club called Pau FC.
During his time playing for Sevilla, Julien sometimes had "SQD" written on the back of his shirt. This was a way to phonetically spell his last name, Escudé.
