Julio Alberto Teherán Pinto, born on January 27, 1991, is a professional baseball pitcher from Cartagena, Colombia. He currently plays for the Sultanes de Monterrey in the Mexican League. Julio has also played for several teams in Major League Baseball (MLB), including the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, and New York Mets. He first joined the Braves in 2007 and started playing in the MLB in 2011. He was chosen as an MLB All-Star twice, in 2014 and 2016.

Julio Teherán's Baseball Journey
Starting in the Minor Leagues
Julio Teherán began his professional baseball career in 2008. He signed with the Atlanta Braves on July 3, 2007. He started playing for their minor league teams, like the Danville Braves and Rome Braves.
By 2010, Baseball America magazine called him the Braves' third-best young player. He had a great season, finishing with a 9–8 record and 159 strikeouts. In 2011, he was ranked as the top prospect for the Braves. He even pitched in the 2011 All-Star Futures Game, which showcases future MLB stars.
Making it to Major League Baseball (MLB)
Teherán made his first appearance in Major League Baseball on May 7, 2011, with the Atlanta Braves. He pitched against the Philadelphia Phillies. He got his first MLB win on September 8, 2011, against the New York Mets.
In 2012, Teherán was still considered one of the top young players in baseball. He tried to earn a permanent spot with the Braves. However, he struggled a bit that year and spent most of the season in the minor leagues.
Breakout Seasons with the Braves
The year 2013 was a big one for Teherán. He showed how talented he was, finishing the season with a 14-8 record. He also had a low ERA of 3.20 and 170 strikeouts. On June 5, he almost pitched a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In 2014, Teherán signed a long-term contract with the Braves. He was chosen to be an All-Star for the first time. He was the second player from Colombia to become an All-Star. He finished the season with a 14–13 record and a strong 2.89 ERA.
He continued to be the Braves' main starting pitcher. In 2015, he won his first Opening Day start against the Miami Marlins. In 2016, he was named an All-Star for the second time. He also set a personal best with 12 strikeouts in one game.
Later Years with the Braves
Teherán was the Braves' Opening Day starting pitcher for four years in a row, from 2014 to 2017. This put him in a special group of Braves pitchers. In 2017, he was the starting pitcher for the very first game at the Braves' new stadium, SunTrust Park.
In 2018, he made history by being the first Braves pitcher to start five Opening Day games in a row. He also hit his first career home run that year. In 2019, he tied a franchise record for the most consecutive Opening Day starts. After the 2019 season, Teherán became a free agent.
Playing for Other MLB Teams
In 2020, Julio Teherán signed with the Los Angeles Angels. He played 10 games for them during a season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, he joined the Detroit Tigers. He won his first game with the Tigers. However, he was placed on the injured list early in the season due to a shoulder injury.
In 2023, Teherán signed with the Milwaukee Brewers. He played 14 games for them, including 11 starts. He had a 3–5 record with a 4.40 ERA.
In 2024, he signed with the New York Mets. He made one start for them before becoming a free agent again. He then signed minor league contracts with the Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles.
Return to the Mexican League
After his time in MLB, Julio Teherán has also played in the Mexican League. He played for the Toros de Tijuana and the Sultanes de Monterrey in 2022. In July 2024, he signed with the Sultanes de Monterrey for a second time.
How Julio Teherán Pitches
Julio Teherán throws several different types of pitches. His main pitches are a four seam fastball, which is very fast, and a two seam fastball. He also throws a slider and a change up. He has a curveball and sometimes uses a screwball.
Teherán is also known for his excellent pickoff move. This is a special move pitchers use to try and catch runners off base. In 2014, he was one of the best in the league at picking off runners.
Julio Teherán's Family Life
Julio Teherán's uncle, Miguel, used to work as a scout for the Braves. Julio's second cousin, Sugar Ray Marimón, is also a baseball player. They grew up together in Cartagena, Colombia, and were even teammates on the Braves in 2015.
Julio Teherán married Yoselin Rincón in February 2016. Their first child was born later that year in August.
