On 19 February 1983, Pope John Paul II chose him to be the Archbishop of Semarang. An archbishop is a very senior bishop who leads a large area of churches called an archdiocese. He officially became an archbishop on 29 June 1983. Cardinal Justinus Darmojuwono again played a role in this important ceremony.
In 1984, he was also given the job of leading the Military Ordinariate of Indonesia. This meant he was responsible for the spiritual care of Catholic members in the Indonesian military.
A very significant event happened on 26 November 1994. Pope John Paul II made him a Cardinal. This is one of the highest ranks in the Catholic Church, just below the Pope. He became the second Indonesian person ever to be a cardinal. The first was Cardinal Darmojuwono, who had passed away earlier that year.
In 1996, he became the Archbishop of Jakarta. He served in this role until 2010. He also led the Bishops' Conference of Indonesia twice, from 1988 to 1997 and again from 2001 to 2006. This conference helps guide the Catholic Church in Indonesia.
