Early Life and Education
Julius Darmaatmadja began his journey in the church when he joined the Saint Peter Canisius Minor seminary in Magelang, Central Java, in 1951. Later, in 1957, he became part of the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits.
Studying Philosophy and Theology
He studied philosophy from 1961 to 1964 at De Nobili College in Pune, India. After that, he studied theology from 1966 to 1970 at Saint Ignatius College in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. These studies helped him prepare for his role as a priest.
Becoming a Priest
On December 18, 1969, Julius Darmaatmadja was ordained as a priest by Cardinal Justinus Darmojuwono. After his ordination, he worked as a parish priest in the Archdiocese of Semarang from 1971 to 1973. He also served in the Indonesian Province of the Society of Jesus from 1973 to 1978. From 1978 to 1981, he was the Rector of the Saint Peter Canisius minor seminary. Before becoming an Archbishop, he was the Provincial of the Indonesian Province of the Society of Jesus from 1981 to 1983.
Leadership in the Church
On February 19, 1983, Pope John Paul II chose him to be the Archbishop of Semarang. He officially became an Archbishop on June 29, 1983, in a ceremony led by Justinus Darmojuwono. In 1984, he was also given the role of Ordinary for the Indonesian Military Forces. This meant he was responsible for the spiritual care of military personnel.
Becoming a Cardinal
Julius Darmaatmadja was made a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II on November 26, 1994. He became a Cardinal-Priest of the S Cuore di Maria church. This was a very important moment because he was only the second Indonesian to become a Cardinal. The first Indonesian Cardinal, Cardinal Darmojuwono, had passed away earlier that year.
Archbishop of Jakarta
After Cardinal Leo Soekoto retired, Julius Darmaatmadja was appointed as the Archbishop of Jakarta. He officially took on this role on January 11, 1996. He also served as the President of the National Bishops' Conference of Indonesia for two terms: from 1988 to 1997 and again from 2001 to 2006. This role meant he led the meetings and decisions of all the bishops in Indonesia.
Retirement
