Jumaine Lanard Jones, born on February 10, 1979, is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played in the NBA, which is the top basketball league, from 1999 to 2007. Jumaine was known for playing both small forward and power forward positions on the court.

Early Basketball Career

Jumaine Jones was nicknamed "Thrilla From Camilla." He was born in Cocoa, Florida, but moved to Camilla, Georgia, for high school. There, he played competitive high school basketball. In his senior year (1997), he was named a 2nd Team Parade All-American. He averaged 32.8 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.6 blocks per game.

College Years at Georgia

Jones then played two excellent seasons at the University of Georgia. As a freshman in the 1997–98 season, he shared the Freshman of the Year award. He led his team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.7 points and 8.5 rebounds.

In his second year (1998–99), Jones became the first sophomore from UGA to lead the SEC in scoring since 1984. He averaged 18.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.2 steals. He was also the first sophomore in school history to score 1,000 points since Dominique Wilkins in 1981. That same year, he represented the U.S. at the 1998 Goodwill Games. He started all five games alongside future NBA stars like Elton Brand and Wally Szczerbiak.

Professional Basketball Journey

Playing in the NBA

Jumaine Jones decided to enter the 1999 NBA draft. The Atlanta Hawks picked him as the 27th overall player. However, he was immediately traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, where he played for two years. On December 30, 1999, in a game against the Portland Trail Blazers, Jones scored the very last basket of the 1990s. This moment is part of NBA history.

The 76ers became the Eastern Conference champions in 2001. Jones started during the postseason after a teammate got injured. He even played in the 2001 NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers. His best game in the 2001 NBA playoffs was in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. He scored 16 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in that important game.

After the 76ers, Jones played two years with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was then traded to the Boston Celtics. In Boston, he had an injury that limited his playing time. In 2004, he moved to the Los Angeles Lakers. On October 26, 2005, Jones was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats. On August 31, 2006, he signed a one-year contract with the Phoenix Suns. He briefly signed with the New Jersey Nets in October 2007 before moving overseas.

Playing Internationally

After his time in the NBA, Jumaine Jones played basketball in other countries. On October 24, 2007, he signed a one-year contract with Basket Napoli in Italy. With Napoli, he averaged 17.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

On July 21, 2008, Jones signed with PBC Ural Great Perm in the Russian Basketball Super League. He averaged 7.4 points and 5.2 rebounds there. In July 2009, he signed with Juvecaserta Basket in Italy. In July 2011, he joined Victoria Libertas Pesaro, also in Italy. In 2012, he played for Bnei Herzliya in Israel. In 2013, he signed with the Mets de Guaynabo in Puerto Rico.

He also had a short time playing for Sagesse Club Beirut in Lebanon. In September 2013, he signed a one-year deal with Levski Sofia in Bulgaria. On December 3, 2014, he signed with the Mexican team Titánicos de León. Jumaine Jones continued playing professionally until 2016.
