Career Highlights
Early Life and High School
Justyn Warner grew up in Scarborough, Ontario. He went to Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute. In high school, Justyn was a talented athlete in two sports: football and track. He was especially good at sprinting.
In 2005, during his last year of high school, Justyn won four big titles. These were at the provincial O.F.S.A.A. (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) track championships. He won the 100m, 200m, 4 × 100 m relay, and 4 × 400 m relay races.
Junior Success
Justyn showed his talent early on. On July 30, 2005, he came in second place in the 100 m race. This was at the Pan Am Junior Games held in Windsor, Ontario. His time of 10.26 seconds set a new Canadian Junior record.
About a year later, on August 16, 2006, he won another silver medal. This was in the 100 m at the 2006 World Junior Championships in Athletics. The event took place in Beijing, China.
College Years
Justyn Warner received a full scholarship to Texas Christian University (TCU). There, he competed in the NCAA as a Horned Frog. He was named an All-American three times, which is a big honor for college athletes. In 2009, he graduated from TCU with a degree in Kinesiology. This is the study of how the body moves.
Olympic and World Championships
2012 London Olympics
In 2012, Justyn qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics in the 100m race. He won his first Canadian championship with a time of 10.15 seconds. This also meant he could join the 4 × 100 m relay team.
At the Olympic Games in London, Justyn ran his fastest time ever in the 100m. He ran 10.09 seconds twice, in both the heat and the semi-final. He finished 13th overall.
The 4 × 100 m relay team included Gavin Smellie, Oluseyi Smith, Jared Connaughton, and Justyn Warner as the anchor runner. In the final race, the Canadian team crossed the finish line in third place. They thought they had won a bronze medal. However, they were later disqualified. Officials decided that one of the teammates had stepped on the lane line. The bronze medal then went to the team from Trinidad and Tobago.
2013 World Championships
In August 2013, Justyn Warner helped his Canadian teammates win a bronze medal. The team included Gavin Smellie, Aaron Brown, and Dontae Richards-Kwok. They competed in the 2013 World Championships in Athletics in Moscow. They won bronze in the men's sprint relay event after another team was disqualified.
