Jönköping Municipality (which is Jönköpings kommun in Swedish) is a local government area in southern Sweden. It's part of Jönköping County. The main city and where the local government is based is Jönköping. This municipality is located right by the southern end of a large lake called Vättern.

A Look at Jönköping's History
The area that makes up Jönköping Municipality today used to be more than 20 smaller local government areas. These included three places that were once called cities.
In 1952, these many areas were combined, reducing the number of local units to 13. The Jönköping Municipality you see today was officially created in 1971. This happened during a big change across Sweden to make local governments work better.

Sports in Jönköping
A cool fact about Jönköping is that the International Floorball Federation was started here in 1986. It was founded in Huskvarna, which is in the eastern part of Jönköping.
